How did you
attract/address your
audience?
By Sarah.E.H
• For our media thriller film “The Forsaken” we
made sure to appeal to a chosen target audience
of young people aged 16-25. This is important to
do, as it allows restrictions to be met, and also
helps us to focus on what a social group’s needs.
To help attract this specific audience, we had to
make sure features they would enjoy were met
and played out. We rated our film at a 15, which
was suitable for our target audience and allowed
appropriate strong themes to be shown. We then
looked at what we should include to keep the
viewer interested and what conventions they
would like to see in a thriller film.
Emphasis on hidden
identity
• Close up of gorilla mask
• Deepened voice
• Surprises audience
As our target audience was for teens/young adults, this
made us think about what they go through in daily life.
We brainstormed that they are still finding themselves in
society, so by having this hidden identity they could
possibly see themselves in it.
Sound
• Clams Casino – I’m The Devil
• You can hear mumbled deep
voices and low synth sounds. It
creates an atmosphere straight
away drawing the audience in.
• I made sure to keep some parts
silent to add some suspense and
keep the audience waiting to be
thrilled.
• Creepy sound/music
• It was difficult to find royalty free
music, but by checking on
YouTube I saw that using this song
was okay once it was mentioned
and given credit to.
the film only shows the first two minutes of an entire
film, we didn’t want to give away too much. To achieve a
suspenseful effect, we had to make sure to leave the
audience in a confused state, where they are
questioning what happens next. Our opening is quite
graphic and explained a lot through dialogue, so by
removing the dialogue it doesn’t give too much away
from the audience on what the plot is.
Using a modern type of song would have instantly
drawn a lot of attention to an audience, as their hearing
senses are working. Using instrumental music over
dialogue was more successful when paying attention to
the opening credits also, so our viewer wouldn’t be too
overwhelmed.
Specific moments that would attract
our audience to our film are
moments such as:
• The zoom in close up of
the gorilla monkey mask
on the table. It connotes
sinister themes and also
looks very frightening. It
leaves the audience
feeling confused as they
are still unsure of the
hidden identity.
• The first shot of Lewis walking towards his
house. The high angle shot makes him look
weak and vulnerable. The black and white
filter makes it appear more intimidating, as
you only focus on him. It also makes the first
scene very forbidden and foreshadows the
chilling upcoming events.
