2. In my magazine I chose to represent the hip-hop culture in America. More
specifically I chose to represent the rapper lifestyle which many people try to
mimic and can be seen as trying to act “gangster “or “hood”. The culture
includes having a lot of money which is known as “ballin”. Wearing expensive
cloths that have designer brands like Louie Vuitton, True Religion and Gucci.

3. Being confident is also part of the attitude and acting as if you’re the best. People mostly
associate black people with this type of culture but some other races are starting to mimic
this as well.
From my STA’s I found lots of codes and conventions of hip-hop magazines which portray
the culture in their magazine. Looking at the main image you can see the model looking
directly in the camera looking confident. This portrays most rappers as strong and bold.
Normally the pull quote suggests the rapper is important. For example a pull quote from
the front cover of vibe magazine said “I am rap.” This is quite I bold statement and shows
this rapper to be quite cocky. Some of the content in the magazine is about rappers having
arguments with each other or even gun fights. This portrays them as quite violent but not
all rappers are like this.

4. I looked at main images of other magazines and looked at the type of poses
rappers did. Then I told my model to pose like this so he looked like a rapper.
This included pointing at the camera, signs with his hands and standing
there with his arms crossed.

5. When taking my pictures I made my model wear specific cloths so that he
looked like a rapper. He wore a snapback hat which a lot of rappers wear. He
wore a Ralph Laruen t-shirt and true religion jeans which are considered as
expensive cloths. A lot of rapper wear these cloths which is why they are
relevant. I chose a mix-race model because rappers are predominantly black
or mix-race. Also I told him to wear a Jesus piece chain which many rappers
have and rap about.
