There are key elements that are necessary to be successful in online learning as well as
with most careers. These skills are useful for those in roles of leadership to maintain order and
productivity. In my career as a training coordinator, skills such as organization, time
management, and communication are paramount.
Organization is an optimal skill to help efficiency. It is a necessary ability that enhances
learning through orderly schoolwork and increases productivity in one’s job through systematic
documentation. This process allows for files and documents to be arranged so that they can be
easily accessed (Hamilton, 2013). Paperwork organization allows for training documents to be
updated and placed in specific binders for dissemination to team members. Additionally, it is
imperative to keep email files organized so that tasks are not forgotten or overlooked. Just as
years ago when paper mail had to be sorted, email must be sorted or grouped into appropriate
folders (Weber & Horn, 2011). Great organization skills make keeping and accessing
information efficient.
Time management is an element or skill that allows employees as well as students to get
the most out of the allotted time. “It’s been estimated that reading, responding, and doing
something with business e-mail can consume two to four hours each and every day!” (Weber &
Horn, 2011, p. 33). Prioritizing tasks and scheduling events allow one to maximize productivity
(Hamilton, 2013). When time is scheduled and work is ordered, the most important things get
done first. It does not matter if an unexpected meeting is called; the imperative jobs have been
accomplished or planned. Highlighting the most important tasks ensures that those take first
place and do not get overlooked in a rush. Along with time management comes the ability to be

Communication is an activity, skill, and art that incorporates lessons learned across a wide spectrum of human knowledge. Perhaps the most time-honored form of communication is storytelling. We’ve told each other stories for ages to help make sense of our world, anticipate the future, and certainly to entertain ourselves. The art of storytelling draws on your understanding of yourself, your message, and how you communicate it to an audience that is simultaneously communicating back to you. Your anticipation, reaction, and adaptation to the process will determine how successfully you are able to communicate. You were not born knowing how to write or even how to talk—but in the process of growing up, you have undoubtedly learned how to tell, and how not tell, a story out loud and in writing.
You didn’t learn to text in a day and didn’t learn all the codes—from LOL (laugh out loud) to BRB (be right back)—right away. In the same way, learning to communicate well requires you to read and study how others have expressed themselves, then adapt what you have learned to your present task—whether it is texting a brief message to a friend, presenting your qualifications in a job interview, or writing a business report. You come to this text with skills and an understanding that will provide a valuable foundation as we explore the communication process.
Effective communication takes preparation, practice, and persistence. There are many ways to learn communication skills; the school of experience, or “hard knocks,” is one of them. But in the business environment, a “knock” (or lesson learned) may come at the expense of your credibility through a blown presentation to a client. The classroom environment, with a compilation of information and resources such as a text, can offer you a trial run where you get to try out new ideas and skills before you have to use them to communicate effectively to make a sale or form a new partnership. Listening to yourself, or perhaps the comments of others, may help you reflect on new ways to present, or perceive, thoughts, ideas and concepts. Getting the Vision Right
Much has been written about the importance of vision in leadership and specifically in organizational change efforts (Kotter, 2012), the idea being that clarity of this vision will become an aligning and galvanizing force, driving efforts and resources toward the needed change. There is some truth to this, but it is an incomplete truth.
It is too easy for a leader to run into a “blind spot” with his or her own vision alone. The vast majority of leaders are better served engaging their upper-level and mid-level teams for the feedback needed to avoid that type of “blind spot” problem. Vision is only as good as the problems it effectively addresses and the future it can bring to the organization. It is only as good as the future positioning that it creates for the organization to maximize its strengths, minimize its weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities that arise from this new position, and alleviate threats to organizational survival and success.
In a real sense, vision is about belief in a targeted future. So how do leaders miraculously attain this perfect vision? The answer is they do not, at least they do not do it effectively alone, although many leaders mistakenly act alone. Good vision gets built over time. It includes understanding the need and pain in the current organizational environment, coupled with monitoring the external environment for trends, new technologies, new processes, new markets, customer need, new opportunities, an expected future with clarity about the organization’s role in that future, and so forth. The list is large and growing every day, so good leaders must be prudent in developing accurate feedback loops to stay informed in order to have the knowledge base needed to develop an effective vision. In addition to this knowledge base, the vision cannot be created in a vacuum, meaning the leader develops the vision and everyone else implements it. A good vision will need to stand up to intense and difficult critical scrutiny from knowledgeable individuals in multiple areas, and good leaders will want this scrutiny and not avoid it or use their power to keep it from occurring, because this critical reflection and scrutiny of the vision coupled with the dialogue of knowledgeable individuals from various areas covers “blind spots” and ensures that the vision developed and the strategy to get there are evidence-based, and not wishful thinking.

Some people value sustainability more that development and vice versa. The main issue you see is through sustainable developments three main pillars; environmental, economic, and social. Getting the Vision Right
Much has been written about the importance of vision in leadership and specifically in organizational change efforts (Kotter, 2012), the idea being that clarity of this vision will become an aligning and galvanizing force, driving efforts and resources toward the needed change. There is some truth to this, but it is an incomplete truth.
It is too easy for a leader to run into a “blind spot” with his or her own vision alone. The vast majority of leaders are better served engaging their upper-level and mid-level teams for the feedback needed to avoid that type of “blind spot” problem. Vision is only as good as the problems it effectively addresses and the future it can bring to the organization. It is only as good as the future positioning that it creates for the organization to maximize its strengths, minimize its weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities that arise from this new position, and alleviate threats to organizational survival and success.
In a real sense, vision is about belief in a targeted future. So how do leaders miraculously attain this perfect vision? The answer is they do not, at least they do not do it effectively alone, although many leaders mistakenly act alone. Good vision gets built over time. It includes understanding the need and pain in the current organizational environment, coupled with monitoring the external environment for trends, new technologies, new processes, new markets, customer need, new opportunities, an expected future with clarity about the organization’s role in that future, and so forth. The list is large and growing every day, so good leaders must be prudent in developing accurate feedback loops to stay informed in order to have the knowledge base needed to develop an effective vision. In addition to this knowledge base, the vision cannot be created in a vacuum, meaning the leader develops the vision and everyone else implements it. A good vision will need to stand up to intense and difficult critical scrutiny from knowledgeable individuals in multiple areas, and good leaders will want this scrutiny and not avoid it or use their power to keep it from occurring, because this critical reflection and scrutiny of the vision coupled with the dialogue of knowledgeable individuals from various areas covers “blind spots” and ensures that the vision developed and the strategy to get there are evidence-based, and not wishful thinking.

A group of record company executives, sitting down to sketch the perfect rock star, may well come up with someone a little like Dave Grohl. He has the look – long, thick black hair; he has the talent – he plays the drums, guitar and piano, he sings and he writes his own songs; and, above all, he has both pedigree and credibility.
In the early 1990s, as drummer with seminal grunge band Nirvana, Grohl helped change the face of popular music. Today, as lead singer with stadium-filling rock giants Foo Fighters, he is a multi-millionaire who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, won six Grammy awards and is president of his own record label. Alongside Foo Fighters he has a number of side projects (including super group Them Crooked Vultures, with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones); a documentary about his band shot by Oscar-winning director James Moll was released last month and his seventh album, Wasting Light, is out on Monday. Now 42, Grohl – and his brand of rock ’n’ roll – has grown up, had kids and settled down.
We meet at Studio 606, the 8,000 sq ft recording space he built in 2005 in the Northridge area of Los Angeles. Outside, the Californian spring sunshine throws stark shadows across some neighborhoods that estate agents would describe euphemistically as “mixed”; from inside this large utilitarian building, with its tinted windows, the blue sky looks almost overcast.
Grohl, who is tall, lean and has grown into his slightly goofy looks, sets down the keys to his decidedly un-rock ’n’ roll grey BMW estate, tucks his shoulder-length hair behind his ear and flips the lid on his laptop. “Sorry,” he beams. “I’ve just got to check my e-mail. I want to see if my daughter got into private school.” Grohl married Jordyn Blum in 2003, and they have two daughters, Violet Maye, aged four, and Harper Willow, one.
The upstairs lounge looks like a bachelor pad: there’s a fridge, jukebox and widescreen TV with an eclectic selection of boxsets: The Office, ACDC and Bon Jovi gigs, and a tape of the Make-up and Effects trade show 1997. Scattered across the purple sofa are cushions covered with old band T-shirts (Slayer, The Police, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Led Zeppelin) made by Grohl’s mother. “She called up and said ‘David, what do you want me to do with those T-shirts in the attic?’,” says Grohl in a falsetto.

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
