The document discusses the creative choices made in developing a music video. It drew inspiration from Maren Morris's "I Could Use a Love Song" video in its use of narrative and cuts between the singer and character. The main character expresses emotional trauma through dance, as in the inspiration video. Most of the original video is in black and white to convey mystery and loss, as the characters are homeless, bullied, or distant from family. Only the singer is in color, restoring it to the characters' lives by reuniting them.

Music Video
2. I could use a love song - Maren Morris
I took a lot of inspiration from the music video “I could use a love
song” because like mine that music video is narrative led with cuts to
the vocalist and it has the main character dancing.
The dancing is the main aspect that I took on board for my music video,
as both my character and Shelley Hennig’s character is Maren Morris’s
music video is that they are both going through emotional trauma.
Shelley Hennig’s character wants to follow her dreams of becoming a
dancer, but her boyfriend wants her to stay at home with him, he does
not believe she can make it, as her dreams grow he grows more violent
to the point that he scares her. She realises this pain through the
medium of dance.
Therefore, in my video my character is experiencing a different type of
emotional trauma, at the beginning of the music video, we see her arrive
at her house, only to find a note and no one home, which she is sad
about, which shows that she doesn’t have the happiest home life. Later
on in the video, we find out her best friend is missing and this hurts her
too, and she is seen dancing to release this pain.
3. Colour
One of the most important parts of my music video is that the majority is in black
and white. This is to give it a sense of mystery, but also loss. Black and white
can imply that something is missing from someone’s life. They’re four main
characters in my music video. Child A and Teenager A, who are siblings and are
homeless, they are also seen on missing posters throughout the video. Child B
who is bullied and was best friend’s with Child A, who went missing. And
Teenager B, whose doesn’t have the closest relationship with her family and was
best friend’s with Teenager A before they went missing. Child A and Teenager A
are shown in black and white because they are lost and need to be found. Child
B’s scenes are in black and white because he is bullied, and he needs his friend
back. Teenager B’s scenes are in black and white because she isn’t close to her
family, and she needs her friend back.
The only character in colour, is the vocalist. This is because nearing the end of
the video, she drops letters off to all of the characters which reunites them all in
the end. Therefore she restores colour to their lives. When Teenager A and B
reunite, the colour slowly fades back in, the same with Child A and B.
I saw black and white being used in many narrative led music videos, like All Of
Me By John Legend and Say You Won’t Let Go By James Arthur. However, I
went against what both videos do. Both videos are black and white all the way
through, I wanted to use colour as the thing missing from the character’s lives.
