QUESTION 1-
“IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?”
BY MIA ROBERTS
MISE EN
SCENE
Location
In my film this
particular part is
actually in black
and white, making
it dull and a scary
atmosphere.
For my post apocalyptic film, I
chose to do my filming above a
motorway on a bridge. Also at
the side of the bridge was a patch
of grass and pathways where I also
did my filming.
I took this inspiration
from a scene in a post
apocalyptic film, The
Road. Where you can
clearly see that is a PA
film due to the set,
atmosphere and colour
of this image.
MISE EN SCENE
PROPS
The ring in this shot is the
most significant prop in the
film opening because it’s a
reminder of how her life
used to be.
This contrasts with the film, ‘The
Road’ where I got this
inspiration from, in the scene
where they are wandering and
money is all on the floor in this
building and it is no object, they
just walk all over it.
COSTUME AND MAKEUP
In my post
apocalyptic film
opening, I used the
influence from The
Book of Eli for my
influence in
designing the
clothing. For
example, as the
main character I
included walking
boots, black
I got the influence
from the film The
Book of Eli, when
the girl goes into
action in the scene
where they’re in that
house and there’s
the group outside
shooting the house,
she wears a similar
outfit which protects
her from the bullets.
CAMERA ANGLES AND
SHOTS
I used a range of camera angles
in my post apocalyptic sequence.
This includes POV shots, birds
eye view and low shot angles.
The POV shot shows what the
character is seeing a that
moment in time. The birds eye
shot gives the contextual factors
and surroundings of the
characters. Also, the low shot
angles define facial expressions.
I took this inspiration from a
post apocalyptic film called I Am
Legend. Many camera angles and
shots are used to show
surroundings and facial
expressions. For example, a
panning/establishing shot is used
at the beginning of the film to
set the scene to show the
audience the theme is post
apocalyptic.
LIGHTING
I tried to
limit the
lighting in
my post
apocalyptic
sequence,
although
this was a
problem due
to me filming
in the
evening and
streetlights
were in the
background
of some
shots. This
makes it
seem like
the film is
not post
apocalyptic
but there is
I took the inspiration from
the film The Road where
in some scenes in the film
there is only natural light
which show the audience
what is going on.
Lighting is a very important
aspect, it can make you focus
on certain parts of a scene or
realise the most significant
feelings of a character.
MUSIC AND SOUND
MUSIC
SOUND
This is the background music I
included for my post apocalyptic
sequence, I believe builds up the
tension within the piece and the pace
also works with the movement in the
scenes.
1.
This voice over contextualises
that the sequence is post
apocalyptic, with certain
phrases such as ‘its been two
years since we saw another
living person’.
2.
I used this sound effect of
the rustling leaves to get
across the naturalistic feel
to the storyline.
3.
The sound effect of this
boom is to over exaggerate
the end of the first scene of
my film.
NARRATIVE
The narrative of my post
apocalyptic sequence is about how
a couple are surviving in the world
not knowing what each day will
bring. So the voiceover explains
why the guy leaves because he
cannot stay alive while living with
his wife so he takes the ring and
leaves.The guys thought then prove
he was right when we see the
woman get hit on the head at the
end of the sequence.
I took inspiration from the film I
Am Legend for my sequence
because it starts with the male
character as dominant and strong
as he’s living in the post
apocalyptic world on his own
with his pet dog.
This gave me the idea of
showing the female
character the weaker
character which is while
the male character left
her for his own safety.
CHARACTERS
Female Male
As seen in the sequence,
there is only one female
character and from this we
stereotypically question:
why is she the only female?
Is she strong enough? But I
chose to include only one
female to contrast the
binary opposites in gender
stereotyping females. The
view of women from this
sequence shows
vulnerability.
There are two male
characters in my sequence,
in which they both come
across as strong and
heroic. This results in the
male character leaving the
female who is presented as
weak.
I got my inspiration from the film I
Am Legend who is a man which lives
on his own with no family in result
of the post apocalyptic world.
TITLES
In my post apocalyptic sequence I chose to limit my
choice of titles just down to the actors/actress’s
and director and editor, simply because I believe
that the titles should be left to the end of the film
with all of the cast members. I used the font of
fontfontfontfontfont in the size of 00. Because I
think these are effective and grab attention of the
audience. Although I think that the colour white is
not very bold and can sometimes lose effectiveness
with the light background in the sequence.
I took inspiration for these ideas from
the short film ‘ALONE’ this uses very
limited titles too.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I think the conventions of my post
apocalyptic sequence are similar to a real post apocalyptic
opening scene are similar in the ways that I chose to have a
significant prop which was the ring, chose lighting that
makes the mood and atmosphere of the sequence effective
to an audience, for example dark and dullness connotes no
life. Also, I think the costume choices of ripped denim,
walking boots and hoodies for protection is a believable
costume to be seen in a real post apocalyptic film. I also
believe my choice of only having one female character in my
post apocalyptic sequence because this shows women to be
stereotypically weak lie they are sometimes presented in
real films.
