In what way does your
media product use,
develop or challenge
forms of conventions
of real media products?
Use forms of conventions
O Firstly, we researched other post-apocalyptic
film openings and the way characters are
portrayed as well as whether they reflect or
challenge the stereotypes of the characters
age and other representations. By looking at
‘The walking dead’ and ‘I am legend’ i was
able to gain knowledge of the features used
to reflect the genre.

O Most post-apocalyptic films which we
researched contained loneliness and a fight
for survival. Therefore this helped with our
storyline as we needed to create some sort
of fight for survival so it would represent a
post-apocalyptic genre.
O Their clothing in film openings highlighted
the emptiness.
Challenge forms of
conventions
O I think our film opening both related and
challenged the forms of conventions of real
media products.
O The similarities include the storyline and keeping
the location the same as films of the post-
apocalyptic genre.
O However, we challenged the forms of
conventions as the protagonist in our film
reflects the stereotype of a teenager but is still
wearing similar clothing what would be used
within a film of our genre.
Continued…
O Also, the storyline related to ones seen in
the film openings of films within our genre.
For example, our storyline includes a man
thinking he is all alone but it later
confronted by two other individuals who
want something that he has and therefore
becomes a threat to him- leaving him
fighting for survival.
Originality
O To make our film opening different to other
post-apocalyptic film openings we made the
protagonist go through a hostile state- as he
is held hostage by the two ‘bad’ men. This
gave our film opening a slight edge which
differed from the ones you would usually
see.
The main events throughout
our film opening
1.
This shot shows the ‘good’
protagonist and his home-
indicating no other people
around in a woodland area.
2.
From this shot we see
the protagonist pick up
a half eaten apple, this
highlights his struggle
for survival.
The main events throughout
our film opening
This point of view shot
highlights that the
protagonist is not alone
and something is
watching him.
This shot shows what
is watching him and
by the way they are
perceived visually, it
looks like they are
going to do
something bad.
3. 4.
The main events throughout
our film opening
5. 6.
Shows the two villains
hit the protagonist
with a baseball bat-
which creates a
difference from other
post-apocalyptic
openings.
To create an edge to our
film and add suspense
we have the protagonist
held hostage (tied to a
tree).
The main events throughout
our film opening
This highlights the
two men after
something that
the protagonist
had- which could
potentially be life
saving.
7. 8.
This is the last shot within
our film opening, it creates
suspense and makes the
audience want to know
what happens.
