Evaluation Question 7
““Looking back at yourLooking back at your
preliminary task, what dopreliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt inyou feel you have learnt in
the progression from it tothe progression from it to
the full product?”the full product?”
Narratives of my two filmsNarratives of my two films
In comparison, the narratives to my two films are very differentiated. In my
preliminary film there is a young man who is making his way to a job interview,
when he encounters a serious and life threatening situation when one man in a
mask appears to be following him on his journey. The main character begins to run
and finds himself trapped in an abandoned factory after running in desperation to
escape his soon to be attacker. In confusion, however he finds that there is more
than one attacker after him. What the audience doesn’t know in the beginning of the
film is that there is a backstory to all of this, not just two maniacs on the lose. The
main character is not as innocent as he may seem as the ending proves that there is
something in the past haunting all characters, which leads to these actions taking
place.
On the other hand, my Post Apocalyptic film has a different narrative because it is of
a different genre to my preliminary film. In my Post Apocalyptic film the world’s
resources have come to an end and only a few species have survived including a
small number of humans. This film is set in the future in comparison to my
preliminary film which is set in the present. Featuring two main characters just
fighting to survive in this new world. The two find themselves in a situation of life or
death as a survival pack is stolen off of one character, leading to an epic chase to
survival. The world is very isolated, and highly intoxicated with dangerous animals
this is what makes encounters with other survivors so deadly. The fight to survive is
a struggle for all that remain.
The time working on bothThe time working on both
During the process of filming my preliminary film, it only took one day to film it as me and
my group went to the location at a reasonable time during the day, the film Is also shorter
than my other film at 2.22 . Having three people in my group also played a big role in
being able to record all the scenes within this time as there were different people that
were able to work the camera/ record when there were two characters in a scene. To edit
my film on the other hand it took me about a month to do so as I had to do this
independently, and there is a lot involved when editing your film such as the order of clips,
cutting out certain parts and adding effects.
In comparison to this, the time working on my Post Apocalyptic film was a longer process
than that of my preliminary film, this is because I had one less person in my group
therefore we struggled to get ideas flowing for the production of the film. Another problem
that occurred was the days we were at school and deadlines we had to meet. We recorded
our Post Apocalyptic film over the course of two days due to running out of sunlight the
first day. The narrative to my film made the recording of the film longer than the prelim
task also, meaning the time for me to edit has been about a month and a half because of
the duration of the coming out to be approx. a minute longer.
Camera Shots & Angles usedCamera Shots & Angles used
What both of my films share is ‘Close up’ shots I have not progressed from close up
shots in my most recent films because I think that close up shots are important in
terms of showing character emotions or even the setting of something. For example,
in my preliminary film close ups were used in certain shots to show characters masks
even in broad daylight, I did this in order to make the audience question why they
would go to that extent to conceal their identity. A close up shot was also featured in
order to show the panic in one of the main characters face in the prelim film once he
comes up the stairs of the abandoned building. In oppose to this, the close up shot in
my Post Apocalyptic film of the ‘Beware’ sign was used in order to amplify the setting
in the film.
Other camera angles were used like long shots of the main character to show the
antagonist in the background of my Post Apocalyptic film, used to build tension, in my
opinion this was better than the long shot in my prelim film when my two characters
are chasing the other one. Towards the ending of my Post Apocalyptic film; a high
shot/ angle was incorporated in the main character looking through a stolen bag and
pulling out a note. This angle was made to make him look weak and powerless to the
audience. However, both my films have an over the shoulder shot too, helping to
place the two character in their setting/ homing in on their situation. I think my
camera shots and angles have improved on my second film because of a higher
variety and better quality used.
EditingEditing
In terms of editing in the two films I have produced, the editing in my Post
Apocalyptic film has improved due to a use of more features being included,
perhaps as a result of me getting more accustomed to using Adobe Premiere Pro.
For example unlike my preliminary film, I have simply used Dip to Black in the
beginning of my film after the production title in order to make it look more
professional as that is what a lot of films do in the industry. Although cutting has
been done in both films obviously, I used it to full effect in this film to create a
fast paced effect which leads to a sense of mystery. Furthermore, I have had a
chance to change speed duration in this film, creating a slow motion effect,
adding to the amount of suspension
My preliminary film also has good edits to it such as the fade or ‘Ghosting’
transition in the beginning of the film where the train is coming, and then it
transitions to one of the main characters getting onto the train which adds to the
style of the film. Similarly, both of the films do however have these blank spaces
for a few seconds of darkness, this little effect adds to the suspense of my films.
PlanningPlanning
The forms of planning for the narrative, Mise en scene, location and props used
in both films weren't different in comparison. A story board was used to plan
both my films, in my opinion it is the best way to share my vision. Due to me
and my partner being able to have a visual aid; it enabled us to see exactly how
our video will be mapped out and what it will look like. This also made it easier
for others to understand our ideas rather than just text which is harder to
understand clearly.
The planning was done over a few days as me and my partner both sat and put
our ideas forward. This made production much easier especially since the
storyboard has a thorough line, ensuring we don't forget any scenes.
Furthermore this method of planning saved much time as it wasn't too complex
to do. Having a hard copy allowed us to take it with us whilst we recorded our
filming so planning made it much more fluent both times we did our film.
SoundSound
The choice of music/ soundtracks in my films have been chosen carefully in order to
match the genre and match the flow of what is going on in the film. In my preliminary
film, I used Ruelle's Deep end as my soundtrack due to the fact that the preliminary
film basically has a character that has found himself in the deep end of it all as you
can see at the end of the film. The beginning of the song quotes 'Where can i go,
when the shadows are calling? Shadows are calling me' representing the main
characters situation as the 'shadows' other two characters are after him, so where
can the character go to evade the two as they continuously chase after him. The beat
of the song then gets more dramatic further in, causing more effect as it coincides
with the chase scenes.
The choice of music in my Post Apocalyptic film is much slower than that of the music
in my preliminary film as the narrative and setting is separate. The music has a very
sad and dramatic tone to it, using sounds of famous instruments. Getting the
audience into the feels of the world ending and the sad fight that survivors have to go
through with each other that is sadly necessary in order for them to survive. It really
does set the tone even when the keys of the piano start to begin towards the end of
my film.
Dialogue, dialogue was only used in my preliminary film; no dialogue was used in my
post apocalyptic film. I did this because i wanted the audience to really focused on
what was going on the film. Of course sounds like running etc. was included in both
films though.

EditingEditing In terms of editing in the two films I have produced, the editing in my Post Apocalyptic film has improved due to a use of more features being included, perhaps as a result of me getting more accustomed to using Adobe Premiere Pro. For example unlike my preliminary film, I have simply used Dip to Black in the beginning of my film after the production title in order to make it look more professional as that is what a lot of films do in the industry. Although cutting has been done in both films obviously, I used it to full effect in this film to create a fast paced effect which leads to a sense of mystery. Furthermore, I have had a chance to change speed duration in this film, creating a slow motion effect, adding to the amount of suspension My preliminary film also has good edits to it such as the fade or ‘Ghosting’ transition in the beginning of the film where the train is coming, and then it transitions to one of the main characters getting onto the train which adds to the style of the film. Similarly, both of the films do however have these blank spaces for a few seconds of darkness, this little effect adds to the suspense of my films.
  • 6. PlanningPlanning The forms of planning for the narrative, Mise en scene, location and props used in both films weren't different in comparison. A story board was used to plan both my films, in my opinion it is the best way to share my vision. Due to me and my partner being able to have a visual aid; it enabled us to see exactly how our video will be mapped out and what it will look like. This also made it easier for others to understand our ideas rather than just text which is harder to understand clearly. The planning was done over a few days as me and my partner both sat and put our ideas forward. This made production much easier especially since the storyboard has a thorough line, ensuring we don't forget any scenes. Furthermore this method of planning saved much time as it wasn't too complex to do. Having a hard copy allowed us to take it with us whilst we recorded our filming so planning made it much more fluent both times we did our film.
  • 7. SoundSound The choice of music/ soundtracks in my films have been chosen carefully in order to match the genre and match the flow of what is going on in the film. In my preliminary film, I used Ruelle's Deep end as my soundtrack due to the fact that the preliminary film basically has a character that has found himself in the deep end of it all as you can see at the end of the film. The beginning of the song quotes 'Where can i go, when the shadows are calling? Shadows are calling me' representing the main characters situation as the 'shadows' other two characters are after him, so where can the character go to evade the two as they continuously chase after him. The beat of the song then gets more dramatic further in, causing more effect as it coincides with the chase scenes. The choice of music in my Post Apocalyptic film is much slower than that of the music in my preliminary film as the narrative and setting is separate. The music has a very sad and dramatic tone to it, using sounds of famous instruments. Getting the audience into the feels of the world ending and the sad fight that survivors have to go through with each other that is sadly necessary in order for them to survive. It really does set the tone even when the keys of the piano start to begin towards the end of my film. Dialogue, dialogue was only used in my preliminary film; no dialogue was used in my post apocalyptic film. I did this because i wanted the audience to really focused on what was going on the film. Of course sounds like running etc. was included in both films though.
