The conventions of thriller genre we used are as follows:
- Suspense: is when tension is built. In our film a girl is getting stalked, this creates suspense and
makes the audience on the edge of their seats because it makes them want to find out what will
happen to the girl getting stalked.
•
- Cliff hangers: are when a film has a question at the end of it, so no one knows what happens. At
the end of our film we have a cliff hanger. The girl is pushed in a car and the car races off, not
knowing where she’s going or what will happen next.
-
- Foreboding: is when we fear something bad will happen. This happens throughout our film as
April is getting stalked by a mysterious villain and the audience are given a hint that something
bad will happen to her.
•
- Fast Paced Action: is when there is fast paced movement in a film. There is a chase scene in
our film as April (the girl getting kidnapped) tries to run for her life and escape from the
kidnapper.
-
- Red Herrings: are devices used in thrillers in order to divert the audience from the truth or an
item of significance. In our film we use a red herring because at the start we introduce a
mysterious man making a deal with a father in a bad business. Throughout the film we don’t care
about the deal only for April’s safety (the girl getting kidnapped) and to see what happens in the
end.
-
We tried using conventions such as:
• Blurred line of good and bad
• Enigmas
• Plot Twist
•
A Blurred line of good and bad is when the audience don’t know what is good or
bad.
We tried to use this by making April’s best friend call an unknown person so that the
audience didn’t know whether April’s best friend was good or bad in the film and that
the audience thought that April’s best friend is setting her up to get kidnapped, when it
actually turns out to be her sly dance teacher. This didn’t work out because, we needed
to edit and cut some things out as we filmed too much. So this part of the film was cut
and edited out as it wasn’t essential for our film.
Enigmas are puzzles, something mysterious or a complicated problem. This is
commonly something that a character of the film must solve before the film finishes.
In our film, A Done Deal, we tried creating a puzzle for the father so he could find his
daughter, but we didn’t film it as we had too much film already that we had to cut back
on. However we did try and create a puzzle for the audience to figure out who was good
in the film and who was bad.
Plot twists are when the plot gets turned around so the film doesn’t turn out how you
think it will.
In our film the twist in the plot could have been that the teacher was trying to help
April instead of kidnap her which would change the ending of the film. But the audience
thought she was trying to kidnap and murder her.
Of all films, I would compare my groups film, A Done Deal to the film Taken. Taken is
about a girl who gets kidnapped and her dad searches for her.
