2. All of these images have been taken from our blog. As you can see, we researched many different
opening sequences and scenes from school programmes and films. It is very clear from our research
that all of these types of media contain varying stereotypical characters. The typical ones are the
nerdy kid, popular girls, goths and sporty kids. The nerd tends to be socially awkward, the jock is
confident and sometimes a bully. The goths tend to keep to themselves and the popular girls are
obsessed with their appearance and usually pretty.
As you can see, we chose to emulate the
same characters is our opening sequence
and therefore chose to use forms and
conventions in our opening sequence to
make sure are characters and familiar and
relatable to our target audience.
3. We didn’t use that many props,
and they aren't as visible in this
image, but in the opening
sequence they look really
effective. The main props we
used were Milton’s glasses- as
stereotypically nerds wear
glasses, connoting intelligence.
We also gave the popular girls
bits of make-up as they are
always concerned with
appearance. Dillon the emo has
headphones and the chavs are
using their phones to take
‘selfies.’ Also, you can see, we
used extras to fill up the class
of plenty- all of whom were
perfect and effective.
We did try and suggest a story line in the opening
sequence, and it does link with character positioning.
The idea was to show the audience how Milton fancied
the popular girls, they aren't interested, and they also
laugh at Dillon. The main idea was to surround Tom with
all these characters and see what group he will choose to
be friends with.
The costumes we chose were
at first were an obvious
choice- uniform. But it’s the
details that matter and the
audience can differentiate
characters and are made
aware of different character
traits. For example Milton’s
uniform is very neat- along
with a bow-tie again
suggesting intelligence. His
costume is exaggerated as it
draws his attention to him and
invites negativity towards him.
Dillon’s uniform is scruffy and
the popular girls have chosen
to wear their own things to
improve their looks and act
rebellious.
Linking to suggested story, the position of the characters is
important because it relates to the idea of power between
the class mates. Milton is at the bottom suggesting he is a
weak character, whereas the popular girls are at the very top
suggesting they have the biggest say in the class. From
research, we knew main characters are always in the middleso we did this in ours and placed Tom in the centre of the
shot.
4. This section links to positioning of
characters. Here, you can see
Milton and the clear gap between
him, and the rest of his class
mates. Everyone else is sat
together whereas Milton is cut off
from everyone else and this may
suggest why he is such an eccentric
and tries so hard to fit in.
Here, we have used a very
common convention. In the
overall shot of the class, we
decided to put Tom, the main
character, in the middle. All
shows do this as it lets the
audience know who their main
focus should be on.
Another area and common convention we
used, is the type of editing and after affects.
We knew to get the opening sequence to
production quality, a good amount of
quality affects were needed. Like other
shows, the after affects relate to each
character and give the audience an insight to
their personality and interests. Also showing
their name and introducing them further, to
the audience.
5. Mise-en-scene- The idea of this mainly comes from the
image and the idea of who has control in the image. The
image was chosen as it relates to the story line and who
Tom will choose to befriend. We have also incorporated
the rule of thirds in the image. This is used everywhere
in media products and is the best way to frame the
image for the perfect shot. The facial expression of
Milton and Poppy is good as they looked relaxed but
slightly competitive whereas Tom looks extremely
uncomfortable.
Text- The text on the magazine front cover is very
important. It links to the house style of the overall ‘Class
of Plenty’ brand and creates a sense of familiarity of the
audience. In addition, the idea of the curled and
colourful writing was inspired by research and connotes
a fun feel to the magazine
Common conventions- The magazine cover has many
common conventions. First of all the tag line, letting the
audience know it is the ‘Official’ magazine to give it
credibility. The strap line at the bottom contains other
fun features typical of a children's/pre teen magazine, in
order to make it more interactive for them. Then there's
the barcode, and price- which is competitive in order for
it to have a chance to sell.
6. Text- The text
used again links
to the house
style. I will be
familiar to the
audience for
example if they
have seen the
opening sequence
or magazine, they
will recognise
Class of Plenty.
Common conventions- When comparing other
DVD cases, we realised that a main image and
blurb were particularly important to the case.
Both are used on this and both suggest a story
line. Helping the audience decide whether or not
they want to buy it.
In addition there is a barcode, and PG rating along
with the production company ‘BBC.’
The images- are
all effective, all
introduce
characters and
the writing
behind Tom was
done to create
an enigma and
was introduce
new characters
in a less obvious
way.
Mise-en-scene- of the entire DVD case we
believe connotes and fun, cheeky and slightly
rebellious show for everyone to enjoy. The
colour scheme is bright and will attract
attention, the deep red is used as it is the
same colour of the school jumpers The font is
mainly san-serif to suggest a more child like
production.
7. Our DVD cover and magazine use
common conventions. We took the best
features from all the examples and used
research to find out what the audience
will like. The research consisted of
looking at products aimed at a similar
target audience to ours. We believe
that a interesting cover image along
with a specific house style is a key way
to attract and audience. We also
included a website and this
convergence will help us to broaden our
audience. As a group our product and
overall ‘Class of Plenty’ brand would be
successful.
