Our production takes the traditional fairy tale theme of Hansel and Gretel and adds horror elements to target young adults. Both main characters are girls rather than one of each gender as in the original story. Costumes were designed to represent the characters, with one girl in more feminine clothing and the other in masculine clothes. The location of an isolated cottage deep in the woods was chosen to build suspense. Lighting and camera techniques like handheld shots were used to make the audience feel like they were experiencing the story firsthand. Both diegetic sounds like dialogue and non-diegetic sounds like creepy music were incorporated into the soundtrack.

2. Our production uses, develops and changes forms of conventions by following
the traditional fairy tale theme but then changing it to make it post modern; the
film clip does this by adding horror and scary aspects to what people consider
traditionally should be very light hearted. The fact that we have added a new
aspect to this genre helps us target our audience of young adults as it has a
surprising and gripping element to it.

3. Mise en scene
The costume was something we felt we needed to make
specific and quite obvious to give off a true and relatable image
of a fairy tale. Hansel and Gretel in the original fairy tale were
male and female but this was another twist we added to our film
as both Hannah and Grace were girls; but to help us represent
the original story Hannah wore a more Tom boy costume
(Dungarees and a backpack) whereas Graces costume was very
girly (a dress with knee high socks). The old woman's costume
was quite important as when the character first comes into the
scene it is the first thing the girls see and also the audience. The
costume for the old woman was meant to look a bit scruffy and
untidy to indicate she may be a little crazy but also meant to
look like she is the one in charge and the older, wiser one.

4. The location of the production was very important as it was
the place which would set our scene; in the original story of
Hansel and Gretel they come across a old lonely cottage in
the woods and this was something we needed to take into
consideration. We had to find a suitable location where we
could shoot a scene running through a forest and then also
find a lonely cottage. The lonely cottage is one of the parts
in the film where the suspense builds as they have just come
across what they think is an exciting thing and the location
we chose we thought showed this through the smoke
blowing out of the chimney and the fences surrounding the
cottage.

5. There were a few scenes where a cookie was
shown; the cookie was something which very
much linked to the original film and we thought
this would help the audience to have a better
understanding of not only the original story but
our take on it too. The cookie was our way of
representing innocence and the twist on the
story.

6. Lighting and editing
When editing out film we chose to use the ‘old world’ lighting effect
as we thought that it worked very well with the theme and also make
the scene often look quite eerie. when creating the film we wanted
to make sure that the film made the audience believe that
everything was just how it originally was so that our twists in the
story were surprising and not predictable and we thought that this
effect gave the audience a feel of that classic and traditional story.
The first few scenes you see in the film is of Grace running through
the forest; the last scene of her doing this we used a camera shot
which rises up into the trees above we felt this had a fantasy and
fairy tale feel to it as it is not just focusing on the character the
location as well and leaves the audience wondering where she is and
what will happen.
Another effect that we used was the handheld camera in one of the
scenes in the kitchen; we did this as it added the feeling of realism
and suspense as the audience were able to picture themselves in
their shoes

7. Sound
In our film we have a mix on non-digetic and digetic
sound; We chose for our non-digetic sound to have
Fairy tale, music box music. This music was specifically
chosen as we thought it keeps with the innocent and
young feel to the story but it also does sound quite
creepy and adds a lot of suspense.
The digetic sound that we had was dialogue which
helped portray our characters and their feelings, the
knife scrapping and hitting the floor and heavy
breathing in the forest, this was to add suspense and
impact to the scenes.
