In 1533, Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes landed on what he thought was an island off the coast of Mexico and named it California after the mythic island of California, hoping to find gold and precious stones. California is actually a peninsula located between latitudes 32 and 42 degrees north on the Pacific coast. The earliest inhabitants of California were Native Americans who consisted of many tribes and autonomous communities that represented great linguistic and cultural diversity.
