Quarkus - a next-generation Kubernetes Native Java framework
For years, the client-server architecture has been the de-facto standard to build applications. But a major shift happened. The one model rules them all age is over. A new range of applications and architectures has emerged and impacts how code is written and how applications are deployed and executed. HTTP microservices, reactive applications, message-driven microservices, and serverless are now central players in modern systems.
Quarkus has been designed with this new world in mind and provides first-class support for these different paradigms. Quarkus bootstrap 2020
There are quite many talks about Quarkus, explaining basic development mechanics and advertising extremely small memory footprint and slim deployment artifacts. However in all those talks audience has just to "believe", almost nobody explains, how does Quarkus achieve it, what tools and approaches work under the hood. I'm going to provide a balanced explanation, giving knowledge of how it works behind the scenes, but not going into long complex theoretical stories, which make people sleep during the talk.

GraalVM is an ecosystem and runtime that provides performance advantages to JVM languages like Java, Scala, Groovy, and Kotlin as well as other languages. It includes a just-in-time compiler called Graal that improves efficiency, polyglot APIs for combining languages, and SDK for embedding languages and creating native images. Installation can be done with the JDK which includes Graal starting with JDK 9, or by directly downloading GraalVM from Oracle's website.

Some key features of Spring Boot include automatic configuration, starter dependencies to simplify dependency management, embedded HTTP servers, security, metrics, health checks and externalized configuration. It supports various load balancing algorithms and has options for configuration and parameters to tune its operation.

Leveraging Docker and CoreOS to provide always available Cassandra at Instacl...
Instaclustr provides managed Apache Cassandra and DataStax Enterprise clusters in the cloud. They initially ran Cassandra on custom Ubuntu images but moved to CoreOS for its immutable and self-updating capabilities. Using Docker and CoreOS together allows Cassandra to run in immutable Docker containers while CoreOS handles OS-level updates. Integrating Cassandra containers with the CoreOS and systemd init system provides reliable automatic restarts and the ability to notify when Cassandra is ready using dbus inter-process communication. This architecture provides a robust solution for running and updating Cassandra in production clusters.

Instaclustr provides managed Apache Cassandra and DataStax Enterprise clusters in the cloud. They initially ran Cassandra on custom Ubuntu images but moved to CoreOS for its immutable and self-updating capabilities. Using Docker and CoreOS together allows Cassandra to run in immutable Docker containers while CoreOS handles OS-level updates. Integrating Cassandra containers with the CoreOS and systemd init system provides reliable automatic restarts and the ability to notify when Cassandra is ready using dbus inter-process communication. This architecture provides a robust solution for running and updating Cassandra in production clusters.

Nowadays, containers are more than a cool new tool to play with - they've revolutionized the way we develop, architect and ship software and have become part of our day-to-day operations. On the other hand, Java has been around for more than 2 decades, dominating the entreprise world. Both advocate the "RUN anywhere" principal, but, is it that easy? No! Your perfect working local container will most probably fail on production because of MEMORY &/or CPU issues, since jvm apps assume they OWN the server they are running on.
This session will look at the gotchas of running JVM apps in containers & how to avoid costly pitfalls. We will cover:
_ what updates Java 10 brought to the table to improve container awareness and the issues related to prior versions, including how to address each one of them to avoid the mess.
- tips and tricks to obtain smaller images & best practices while writing your DockerFiles
- some plugins to helps non-containers experts integrate docker in their development process; and
- the concept of "Distroless" Docker Images and how to benefit from it.

Containers > VMs
Historically, sharing a Linux server entailed all kinds of untenable compromises. In addition to the security concerns, there was simply no good way to keep one application from hogging resources and messing with the others. The classic “noisy neighbor” problem made shared systems the bargain-basement slums of the Internet, suitable only for small or throwaway projects.
Serious use-cases traditionally demanded dedicated systems. Over the past decade virtualization (in conjunction with Moore’s law) has democratized the availability of what amount to dedicated systems, and the result is hundreds of thousands of websites and applications deployed into VPS or cloud instances. It’s a step in the right direction, but still has glaring flaws.
Most of these websites are just piles of code sitting on a server somewhere. How did that code got there? How can it can be scaled? Secured? Maintained? It’s anybody’s guess. There simply isn’t enough SysAdmin talent in the world to meet the demands of managing all these apps with anything close to best practices without a better model.
Containers are a whole new ballgame. Unlike VMs, you skip the overhead of running an entire OS for every application environment. There’s also no need to provision a whole new machine to have a place to deploy, meaning you can spin up or scale your application with orders of magnitude more speed and accuracy.
DataStax: Dockerizing Cassandra on Modern Linux
In this session I discuss how we at Instaclustr integrate Docker containers in combination with modern linux technologies, including systemd and journald, to run an enterprise cloud-based hosting solution for DataStax Enterprise and Apache Cassandra. I will discuss the merits of containerisation and how to complete integration with systemd required writing an additional Java Agent that is loaded into the Cassandra JVM.

A new OpenJDK project called CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) aims to address the JVM warmup problem with a different approach. Basic idea is: take a snapshot of a running JVM, store it in files and restore the JVM at a later point in time or even on another machine.

his workshop will shed light on a modern solution to solve application portability, building, delivery, packaging, and system dependency issues. Containers especially Docker have seen accelerated adoption in the web, cloud and recently the enterprise. HPC environments are seeing something similar to the introduction of HPC containers Singularity and Shifter. They provide a good use case for solving software portability, not to mention ensure repeatability of results. Not to mention their ECO system provides for the better development, delivery, testing workflows that were alien to most of HPC environments. This workshop will cover the Theory and hands-on of containers and Its ecosystem. Introducing Docker and singularity containers; Docker as a general-purpose container for almost any app, Singularity as the particular container technology for HPC. The workshop will go over the foundations of the containers platform, including an overview of the platform system components: images, containers, repositories, clustering, and orchestration. The strategy is to demonstrate through "live demo, and hands-on exercises." The reuse case of containers in building a portable distributed application cluster running a variety of workloads including HPC workload.

What is this "docker"
Docker containers provide isolation at the system resource level using namespaces and control groups. This allows each container to run applications packaged with dependencies without conflict. Docker solves issues around dependency management and allows for fast iterative development. To use Docker, a container-enabled kernel is needed along with installing Docker on Windows or Linux. Images contain application code and dependencies and are obtained from Docker Hub or built locally. Docker Compose allows defining multi-container applications and their dependencies. Security with Docker includes capability dropping, namespaces, and profiles with AppArmor and SELinux to control access. Trusted registries and image scanning help ensure secure images.
