Overview of the NYC QC ecosystem
NYC has an opportunity to be a global leader in QC but has to act fast
Quantum Computing is a highly disruptive and very fast moving technology that is currently lead by institutions out of Chicago, Maryland,
California, China, Germany and very few other “epicenters” of QC innovation. Today, NYC is not part of that small group of leaders.
NYC needs to define & proactively build its QC leadership pack for 2 reasons:
NYC has some strong assets to be highly competitive in the QC race. However, currently, NYC is trailing the innovators, researchers and leaders in the
QC space. There is a clear path to take a firm seat at the table of global QC dominance - to get there, immediate action and resources are necessary.
2
1. QC will be a highly disruptive technology
especially for sectors that are strong in and
around NYC such as finance, banking, healthcare,
biotech, logistics, manufacturing, tech and others
2. QC will generate extreme wealth and
opportunities that are impossible for NYC to miss
out on if it ones to continue to be a global
megapolis

The key constituencies
Some leaders, some laggards
QC is a conundrum - on the one hand it is a highly complex, very young technology that is still poorly understood. On the other hand it is a very
clear paradigm shift that will disrupt entire industries. To address this conundrum, a host of key constituencies is needed.
3
Fundamental Research
Absolutely critical to the
success of QC as there is no
consensus and proof yet as
to which approaches,
materials and comms will
make for a reliable solution.
NYC clearly lacks on this
front, yet leadership is
important to advance and
own IP, and build
competitive advantage.
Large tech vendors
Microsoft, Google, Intel are
pouring billions into QC to
build the highly expensive
and complex MVPs needed
to kick-start this revolution.
With IBM, potentially the
global market leader in QC,
NYC is in a front runner
position but also needs to
expand and diversify.
Early adopters
Like every new technology
it takes some bold early
adopters to kick the tires
on it. With a very large
intellectual ecosystem
around QC and many large
corporations dipping their
toes into QC, NYC is
potentially the global
leader when it comes to
trialing QC.
Startups and Investors
Breakthroughs, new
business models and
innovative solutions will
come, in large part, from
new ventures. The
ecosystem of QC startups
and investors in NYC is still
very young and small,
compared to other
locations globally.

Fundamental Research
Urgent need to bolster NYC’s efforts
Fundamental research in QC in and around NYC is relatively weak. While there are some excellent institutions and efforts underway, none of
them is considered leading or large compared to the top researchers out of Chicago, Maryland, Stanford and others. However, the
infrastructure and brainpower to change that is abundant.
4
Large institutions or efforts around NYC:
● https://quantumcircuits.com (CT)
● Stony Brook
● MITRE (Princeton)
● Stevens Institute of Tech has a very small program
● Yale Quantum Institute
● Brookhaven National Laboratory
NYC research institutions with known efforts:
● Office of Advanced Research Computing Rutgers
● Columbia University
● SUNY Polytechnic Institute
● City University of New York
● Simons Foundation
● NASA has a couple people in NYC
● NYU has a very small program
● New York University Langone Health has a very small program
● University of Rochester has a very small program

Corporations
NYC has an enviable position with respect to early adopters
We are all familiar with the large industries and corporations in NYC, many of them will be deeply affected by QC and hence are already
undertaking efforts to understand QC or profit from it. A special mention here goes to IBM who has roughly > 200 people dedicated to QC in
NYC and a global leadership position in both research and commercialization efforts.
5
Other companies with known QC efforts in
NYC:
● Microsoft
● Morgan Stanley
● Barclay’s
● JP Morgan
● Wells Fargo
● Citi
● Goldman Sachs
● Gartner Research has a couple people in
NYC
● Deutsche Bank Labs America
● Tata Consultancy Services
● McKinsey
● Deloitte

Startups & Investors
A very young and small ecosystem
The startup scene in NYC has not yet caught the QC bug. Outside of NYC, most QC ventures do come out of research and academic efforts, in
consequence, with NYC laggard position in this field, new QC ventures in NYC have so far failed to emerge in any meaningful way. In lockstep
with that, NYC based investors do not yet have a serious interest (and understanding) in QC.
6
Known NYC investors with an interest in
QC:
● Citi
● WorldQuant Ventures
● Amyx Ventures
● Marcos Lopez de Prado
● Eniac Ventures
Some known NYC QC ventures:
● Q-Byte
● Qunnect
● http://quantumcomputinginc.com is HQ in NYC
● Rigetti has a couple people in NYC
● Ion IQ Inc has some people in NYC
● D-Wave has a couple people in NYC
● Deborah Berebichez, Ph.D.
● New York Quantum Computing Meetup (about
500 members and roughly 50 attendees per
event)

IBM is a huge
strength for NYC
● Other budding research efforts
● Strong early adopter

● Large pool of QC intellectuals
S
● Bolster IBM
● Attract more Microsoft,
Google, Intel, etc
● Foster an ecosystem
Lack in fundamental
research
● Lack of entrepreneurial QC
activity and investors
W
● Bolster programs at our

● Federate fundamental
research efforts
● Align QC entrepreneurship

●
●
O
● A unique breadth and
depth of resources
● Build a community around
it with the right incentives
and programs

An opportunity for NYC
An opportunity for global disruption out of NYC
NYC has some unique assets in the QC race that will be very hard to replicate for others. It also has some challenges that need to be proactively
addressed - immediately.
Doing so while aligning with the critical sectors and priorities of the city at large with build a tremendously strong community around QC innovation
with benefits for from Sunset Park to Wall Street, Williamsburg to Midtown across all levels of society and industry.
8
1. This will require a public, fully resourced commitment to QC
2. A detailed, near terms plan to support and attract large tech
vendors
3. Leading fundamental research
4. A highly engaged community of, entrepreneurs & investors
