Quality of service (QoS) ensures that different types of network traffic receive priority levels of transmission depending on their needs. As users demand higher data rates for video and music streaming, networks and devices must improve to handle this increased traffic. QoS grades the priority of packets so that critical applications like phone calls have no delays, while allowing less time-sensitive traffic like web pages to have minor delays without impacting the user experience. Routers must identify packet priorities and decide which to transmit first to optimize resource usage on the network. Implementing QoS is necessary to avoid wasting limited network resources.
