Facing a machine learning problem for the first time can be overwhelming. Hundreds of methods exist for tackling problems such as classification, regression or clustering. Selecting the appropriate method is challenging, specially if no much prior knowledge is known. In addition, most models require to optimise a number of hyperparameters to perform well. Preparing the data for the learning algorithm is also a labour-intensive process that includes cleaning outliers and imperfections, feature selection, data transformation like PCA and more. A workflow connecting preprocessing methods and predictive models is called a multicomponent predictive system (MCPS). This talk introduces the problem of automating the composition and optimisation of MCPSs and also how they can be adapted in changing environments.

Building reliable data-driven predictive systems requires a considerable amount of human effort, especially in the data preparation and cleaning phase. In many application domains, multiple preprocessing steps need to be applied in sequence, constituting a `workflow' and facilitating reproducibility. The concatenation of such workflow with a predictive model forms a Multi-Component Predictive System (MCPS). Automatic MCPS composition can speed up this process by taking the human out of the loop, at the cost of model transparency (i.e. not being comprehensible by human experts). In this paper, we adopt and suitably re-define the Well-handled with Regular Iterations Work Flow (WRI-WF) Petri nets to represent MCPSs. The use of such WRI-WF nets helps to increase the transparency of MCPSs required in industrial applications and make it possible to automatically verify the composed workflows. We also present our experience and results of applying this representation to model soft sensors in chemical production plants.

In this presentation viewers will see the performance of a MySQL Server increase by automatic tuning using an open source GA (Genetic Algorithm) with surrounding smart bits. The full interface code has been made publicly available as open source on GitHub - https://github.com/Percona-QA/gaai Genetic Algorithms - a kind of Artificial Intelligence - have been used for a long time, but only recently the interest towards database applications has spiked. You will see the transactions per second increase and increase again as the server is being adjusted automatically. You will walk away with a better understanding of Genetic Algorithms, it's application to automated database tuning, and how to start with (or continue) your own experiments in this area. All new work, this setup has not been showcased anywhere before.

In regulated industries such as Finance, Healthcare etc. where automated decision making is increasingly becoming used, tracking design of experiments and from inception to deployment is critical to ensure a robust process is adopted. Model Life-cycle management solutions are proposed to track experiments, design robust experiments for hyper parameter tuning, optimization and selection of models and for monitoring. The number of choices and the parameters that need to be tracked makes is significantly challenging to trace experiments and to address reproducibility concerns. In this talk, we discuss QuTrack, a Blockchain-based approach to track experiment and model changes primarily for AI and ML models. In addition, we discuss how change analytics can be used for process improvement and to enhance the model development and deployment processes.

The number of published metabolic network reconstructions are increasing, as are their applications. However, such reconstructions commonly include gaps (see Figure 1), which are due to incomplete source databases or holes in biochemical knowledge reported in literature. The filling of such gaps has been aided through automated techniques which attempt to mitigate these gaps by adding reactions from external resources such as KEGG. The approach introduced here is to apply cheminformatics to determine and quantify chemical similarity across all metabolites in a metabolic network of S. cerevisiae. The hypothesis is that those metabolite pairs of high chemical similarity are likely to form reaction pairs, in which one metabolite can be converted to the other by a single chemical reaction. The similar scoring pairs that do not currently form a reaction pair in the network can be analysed, by either comparison with existing data resources or by literature searches, to determine whether they take part in a metabolic reaction. Following this approach, preliminary results have led to the discovery of missing information from KEGG, and the assignment of function and determination of kinetic constants to a gene of previously unknown function.
