Qatar is a small peninsula located in the Persian Gulf. It has a population of around 2 million people, most of whom are expatriates. Qatar was formerly a British protectorate but gained independence in 1971. It has experienced rapid economic growth and development since the discovery of oil and natural gas reserves. Doha is the capital and largest city, with a modern skyline of skyscrapers. Qatar has invested heavily in education and cultural projects through the Qatar Foundation. The country adheres to Islamic cultural traditions but also has a very international community.
