Editor's Notes

  1. The first time I used finalcut was after I had problems putting the animatic together using imovie, every image I exported into the imovie program would turn black so I had to try and use the old version of finalcut instead. When I first started using the old version of final cut I found that the layout and controls were too confusing, there were too many options and I didn’t know where things were and what they did. Another issue I had was that every time I deleted something from the time line I would then need to drag everything in place again which was very long.Luckily the new version of final cut was installed and I was able to use it in the editing process of my movie.Unlike the previous version, this new finalcut was a lot more user friendly the controls and options were easy to find and use. Additionally the whenever i needed to delete a scene are a shot, I no longer needed to drag everything back in place since the time line would pull everything back for me.One of the ways in which this software has helped me improve the quality of my work is through the large variety of effects it has available. The combination of the day into night and numeric effect played a big role in setting the mood of my film and making it feel like a horror movie. At first me and my partner wanted to film at night but we decided not to as an attempt to preserve the safety of ourselves and acting crew, so we were worried that the location wouldnt look ominous enough and our film consequently wouldn't be as scary. However these effects helped to enhance the creepiness of the location by making it seem even more lifeless and dark, despite the scenes being filmed during the day, furthermore it also allowed my film not to lose any important details from the scenes since the effects gave me control over how dark the shot would be, something that I wouldn’t be able to do if I filmed at night time. The combination of the 50s TV and static helped to enhance the idea of found footage within my film since it provided the scenes inside the DVD with the effect of being faulty or ruined, which could suggest that something could have happened to the camera containing this footage such as being dropped on the floor, which caused the films to turn this way. Which is exactly what happens at the end of the film inside the DVD Rebecca watches, the camera is dropped on the floor when the victim is attacked. The strife effect used in the scenes before the action begins to happen helped these scenes to appear dull and lifeless. Which helps to give the film a more serious tone and set the mood of a horror film , instead of bright and colourful like a comedy. The camcorder effect helped to add more realism to the DVD scenes by making them look like found footage. An additional feature of finalcut is that allows me to experiment with the order that each effect appears. Initially I applied the numeric and then the day into night but letter changed it the other way around since it looked too blue.In addition to all of these effects, finalcut also provides me with a variety of transitions that I can apply to my movie. When choosing which transition to use I thought about the sound effect already on the film and tried to find a transtion that complimented that movement for example the cross dissolve transition from the scene where Rebecca finishes watching the scene on her laptop to the scene of the film in the DVD. At the end of the film I used cube transition to represent the end of the film, by offering a clear shift of atmosphere and image it went from a dark, eerie and serious tone to a more light hearted and bright theme which reflects the company’s image rather than the films. This programs also offers several other toolsSome that I frequently used were the speeding and slowing down tool which I used for the scene where Rebecca drops the camera. Initially the action in the scene was much slower since I got the actress to slowly move the camera and fall down in order to prevent the any damage to the equipment. Then I used this tool to speed it up and look as if she had a harsh fall. I used the slow down tool to make the poltergiest sound effect lower and more intense since it was originally too high pitched.Since me and my partner decided to edit our scenes separately the blade tool played a huge role when it came to putting both of our scenes together. Before exporting her work, I told my partner to leave black spaces between the scenes where I needed to cut with the blade in order to provide a more clean cut and flow between her scenes and mine.Another important toll i used was the voice enhance tool. Initially there were problems with the audio of the final scene in my film, the dialogue was too quite which was a problem since these were important lines, they informed the audience that the girl was amber and punned the main character’s surname lucky. The solution we came up with was to re record the dialogue and place it on top of the scene. However the final product sounded like too much and sounded like the scene was dubbed so I looked for a ne alternative which was the voice enhance tool. This tool made the dialogue much clearer to hear.An additional tool in final cut is the ability to export files just as audios, this provided me with a clear audio file to use over the scene where Rebecca watches the DVD. The original sound coming from the laptop was too squeaky and not clear enough.
  2. Youtube was one of my main sources of research I used for example, when I needed to find short films to reviews and gain inspiration or useful tips I decided to use youtubeInstead of using the BBC film network website. It was also where I found videos regarding other film technologies such as 3D 4D and CGI and had a closer look at the different members of a film crew and the different responsibilities hold, some was already familiar with such as the location scout and others that I didn’t know about such as the Gaffer. However the major role youtube played in my coursework was allowing me to create an account where I can upload videos that showed the different stages me and my partner Anika went through during the planning and editing stages of our film which I could then embed on my blog. Such as the various vlogs we made where we discussed what we would be doing and some of the problems we encountered while doing these tasks such as the third vlog we made where we share our thoughts on reaching the final stages of our film and ancillary products. What I like about youtube is that it allowed me to manage my videos and edit them quickly and easily using the enhancements option without effecting the quality of my videos. This provided me with tools such as the trim tool which I used to trim down the audience feedback video, since it was too long because it started with a reaction and then the feedback at the end. I decided to remove the beginning of the video since she didn’t really have much of a reaction to the film. I also used the flip tool on this video since it was originally filmed upsidedown.Another tool found in the enhancement section was a library of effects that I could apply to my videos such as the ‘black and white” and “thermal effect”. The effects were simple unlike the ones on finalcut but that didnt matter since I only needed to use them on my vlog videos such as the ‘Recording Our Radio Trailer pt.1’ in order make it look more attractive and conceal certain aspects of the room for safety reasons, since equipment is expensive. I also used the Youtube editor when I needed to make quick modifications to some of my videos at home where I didn’t have access to finalcut. For example editing out the shot of the phone on the table in my ‘ what does our film look like’ video. I needed to do this because somebody’s phone number could be seen on the screen so I needed to remove it in order to preserve their privacy and safety since anybody could view my videos.I also used this tool to remove the credits from the extended version of my film and replace it with the updated version found in the final version short version of live evil. I only did this to the final extended version, in the other videos I just covered up the misspelling using the ‘Note’ annotations on YouTube. I also used these annotation to correct what I said in my first vlog where I referred to actors as characters, so I added a speech bubble in order to make clear what I was actually trying to say.Despite this function helping me make quick changes, it caused me to have some problems blending in the new credits into the video since the background sounds in the scenes of both videos didn’t match. This meant that I had to be careful when cutting the scenes so that the end result flowed together instead of having the background sound, suddenly stop. In order to do this I decided to apply a transition to my video, but the youtube editor only had a few simple transitions that didn’t really suit the image of my film, it gave me less choice of what to use so I had to use the simple yet effective “fade in” transition. As an attempt at making my blog posts more visually appealing I decided to add more photos and images that reflected the contents of the blog post. However I wanted to present these photographs in a more interesting way so I searched online for any websites that allowed me to create photo slides or animations and came across Kizoa and MakeAGif. Kizoa allowed me to present my images in a more professional way with transitions so I used this for the photos of the making stages of my products while makeagif basically showed one image after the other so I used it to present the images from the internet.I used the file sharing website Soundcloud In order to upload the different stages of my radio trailer onto my blog. This is also where I uploaded the audio files for my presentation on controversial films and audio profiling. One very nice feature I like about this website site is that it allows the users to add comments at specific areas of the audio which appear as the audio plays, this allows the person who uploaded the video to easily understand what the person who commented meant, unfotunately nobody commented on my audio files which is a shame. Despite the main purpose of me adding these files onto this website being that it allows me to share it on my blog, I also used it as a source of backing up my audio files since it offers me the option of downloading them once they had been uploaded. This is the same reason why I used the website slideshare to upload my powerpoint and word files. But with the further advantage of allowing me to present my written work in a more interesting and visually appealing way using powerpoints and word documents, instead of writing them as simple blog posts. In the process of making my film and finding out about my audience, I used a variety file sharing and social networking sites such as instagram, facebook and hotmail. Me and my partner anika posted our film and ancillary products onto these website in order to see the reaction of our target audience and gain some useful feedback. We knew that we would receive more responces this way because they are websites popular amongst teengaers which are our target audience. It is also gives them the chance to share our products with their own friends and give our videos more views on youtube. Unlike on survey monkey which we used at the start of the year to find out what kind of films our audience enjoyed ,where we had a low response rate since it was a self completing questionnaire which some people prefer not to do are delay it and end up not doing it.
  3. My mobile phone was a device that I used frequently during the production of my products. This was because it is something that I had easy access to and is portable meaning that i could bring it around with me where ever I went, whether it was a filming location or a recording session. With the advances in technology, my phone now has various apps that contain the same functions as other products such as a camera or a recording device, this meant that I no longer need to carry around this products with me since I can just use my phone to document the production stages of my film and record the feedback of my audience. The recording function of my phone played a big role when I needed to record the voiceover for the end scene in my movie. Initially i wanted to use the proper recording equipment but it wasn’t available so I had to use my phone instead. Luckily the audio quality was good which meant that I could indeed use it in my film without it effecting the quality of the scene it was used in.Furthermore the free whatsapp app played a big role in the distribution of our film after we had finished editing and it was upload onto my youtube user. This is because it offers users the option to Broadcast a message to everybody in their contacts list at the same time. This was an effective way of getting our film known not only amongst our target audience but others people as well since it takes advantage of the fact that most teenagers speed a lot of time on their phones texting, meaning that they are more likely to read the message and click onto the link for the video. In addition this app also offers our audience the chance to broadcast and forward the video link to their the friends in their own contacts list which allows our film to become even more youtube views and feedback which proved to be effective when our video reached 102 views within 12 hours of its broadcast on whatsapp. The google search engine was the dominant source of research that I used. Here I was able to find other creative ways and technologies to present my work onto my blog such as the tagxedo website, with I used to create an dark and eerie word cloud of my film’s tagline which reflected the meaning of the tagline and genre of the movie. This website was easy to use. However I didn’t like the fact that the website didn’t allow me to upload my own images for me to use as the shape or backgroun of my word cloud but luckily it did provided me with many options of shapes for my cloud, which I choose to use a hand since my film’s poster also incorporates a red hand in the centre.Another useful website I found using the Google search engine was the Fodey website. Where I was able to create a realistic newspaper front cover Which was an important prop in my film since it created an enigma and engaged the audience, which wouldn’t be possible if the newspaper didn’t look convincing enough.Google also helped me to find royalty free sounds and sound effects. Initially I was using the SoundBible website however I wasn’t able to find many sound effects that matched my film since some of them were exaggerated and too realistic for the sound of being hit by an object you could tell what kind of object it was so I couldn’t really use it for my movie since the object didn’t match. An additional problem with this website is that it didn’t have background sound for me to use in my film and trailer. But After searching on Google I was able find the Premiumbeat and imcompetech websites, which provided me was large library of royalty free sound tracks which offered me more choice over which sound to choose from and find the right one for my film. When talking about the equipment and props used in my film I wanted to present them in a more organised and appealing way that would allow them to stand out in my blog, instead of just posting them as a blog spot with images. So I decided to create the lists using the table tool on microsoft tool. This software allowed me to apply styles to my table and change the background of the heading boxes to make it clear what each section of the table was about. When it came to adding the tables onto my blog I decided not to use the slideshare website and instead post them as images since then I would be able to make them large on the post. This is the same software I used to create the production meeting log.I used the Photoshop software to create my film poster and company logo because it provided me with several tools and effects that I can apply to my images, such as the Magnetic lasso tool which offers me more control over the section I want to cut since i can outline the section of the image I want to use for example the image of the hand holding the DVD that I cut from the screen shot of my film's opening scene , this tool also leaves the edges of the image smooth  which I wouldn't happen if I used the eraser instead.Similarly the magic wand tool allows me to select a large area with the same colour to delete or copy instead of slowly and carefully rubbing out the sections, so it speeds up the making process. It also offers me the chance to apply effects such as Shadow + glow + Bevel and Emboss which together can create the effect of stone or glass onto my title and if used separately it can highlight different images and give them more spotlight by making them more 3D , this prevents them from blending together with the background especially if the colours are similar. The subtle light glow effect around Rebecca in the poster played a big role in showing the that she was the good character in the film, the victim in the story.I really enjoyed using a filming camera for the first time, the footage we took was of very high quality which allowed our final product to look very professional. At first I felt overwhelmed with all the different settings it had such as the shutter and the light balance. But Thanks to the automatic mode I didn’t encounter any problems using this mode already set everything up for us. The tripod wass also great it allowed our panning and tilting shots to be smooth and steady. However in some shots the tripod could be heard moving so I had to remove the sound from the clip such as the scene where Rebecca picks up the DVD.
