For our coursework we had to produce a music video as well a ancillary task which included an album cover with inlay cards and a A4 poster for our artist. We decided to portray our artist as being a conventional “rapper” throughout the music video and the ancillary task. The conventional rapper is being wealthy, related to gangs, talk about struggle, wears a lot of “Bling” and drives nice cars. One way which we have managed to combine both our ancillary task and our music video to portray a conventional rapper is through our settings. In our music video we filmed our artist rapping ahead of a graffiti wall which is also an image we used in our inlay card to show the audience that our artist is from a crime ridden area which links back to our artist talking about struggle in his lyrics. Another way we have combined our ancillary task and our music video to represent our artist as being a conventional rapper is through the use of still images in both productions. The still images show our artist in a photo shoot with a girl suggesting he is a ladies man as well as him being a person of importance hence the photo shoot. We managed to include still images in both the music video and in our album cover as well as our A4 magazine poster.
Another way we combined both texts was through our use of mise en scene as we included pictures of our artist entering a BMW on our back cd cover as well as in our music video which suggest the artist is a conventional rapper as he is successful and Wealthy as he drives a nice car which is also a convention seen in many other music videos to portray wealth and successfulness for example in the “ How we do “ music video we see both 50 cent and The Game rapping while they are in there cars which suggest that they are wealthy.
Our media texts also allows us to portray our rapper as an unconventional rapper. this is done through the use of props as we didn’t have our artist wearing ‘Bling’ as our genre is grime/hip hop our artist is less likely to be wealthy as this type of music usually attracts a niche audience. In our music video as well as our ancillary task we showed our artist as being emotional through the use of still images we managed to show Pepstar looking stressed out and feel like a normal human being. Also both our text show our rapper as being more approachable and not intimidating which allows texts to challenge the typical convention of a rapper.
For our ancillary task we had to produce a music poster for our artist as well as a cd cover. In order to create brand identity we used the same image as well as the same typography on the cd front cover as well as on the cd cover in order to allow our audience to familiarise themselves with the artist and remember who he is. We also had to produce a A4 music poster of our artist which would feature in a music magazine. For our poster advert we included the images of our cd cover as it shows the audience a picture of the album which will allow him to sell more records. The use of the image is also linked with the name of the album, sky high as the artist is posed like he is flying. In order to allow our product to look more realistic we included the logos of famous music stores such as HMV, Play.com and iTunes to give audience the chance to purchase the album.
In our music video we use a wide variety of costumes for our artist which showed that we did not film the video in one day and make our video look professional. The use of a variety of costume allowed our artist to look as if he has been in different places at different times which is what we decided to do in our cctv shot. We used the colour black as the main colour for our artist to wear thought the video as the colour usually connotes an intimidating person as the colour allows the rapper to look hidden. During the video we also had many props we used to reinforce the stereotype of a conventional rapper. The use of a baseball cap allowed us to portray him as gang and crime related as these hats are usually worn by criminal to hide their faces. In addition to this we used a hoodie in many of scenes which again is another type of clothing which has bad connotations to it as it is worn by criminals to hide the face with again reinforce the artist as being a stereotypical rapper and also links with the lyrics in the song as he talks about robbing people and doing scams. The use of a blackberry in some scenes as well as wearing famous brands allows our artist to be seen as being up to dater with the times and suggest that he is wealthy which is another connotation for a rapper.
