HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
 The age / social group featured in our film is that of the
young teenage years.
 We decided to go with this as it is the typical stereotype age
group and gender that gets killed in thriller/horror films.
FEATURED SOCIAL GROUPS
 We portrayed the female character in a way that makes her
out to be troubled and deep in thought, as she stops to look
over the bridge, looking down at cars, perhaps contemplating
suicide. Due to us using the character of a female teenager,
we reinforced the stereotype that girls always get killed in
horrors (such as: Scream, Sorority Row, The Descent etc.). In
my opinion this does ruin the ‘build up’ as the audience will
be able to predict that she is going to die from watching other
films. From a feminist point of view, it could be argued that
our film also portrays women as weak and vulnerable however
it could also been seen that women are strong and unfearful
as she is walking on her own in the dark at night. As the girl is
a teenager we also thought it would be vital to have typical
teenage accessories such as a mobile phone and school bag.
REPRESENTATION OF GENDER
 We also thought it would be important to be set in typical
teenagers bedroom which has PS3’S, a mirror, a video game
and hair products. We did this to really give the impression
and reinforce to the audience of the girls age and how young
she is. This will make her pending death even more shocking
and disturbing. However she is dressed in a relatively
forbidding manner as she is wearing a long black coat, this is
different to the typical teenage dress sense as it isn’t very
girly, yet it could foreshadow to the audience of her up coming
death.
 These two areas of focus were difficult to represent, the girl
was a white female which tells the audience that it is set in a
western country. We didn’t really present her sexuality as this
would be difficult to do in the short time we had, from the
film it would be difficult to tell whether she was straight,
bisexual or homosexual. However from the games console,
their could be a hint that the girl is heterosexual as they may
not be hers and could be her boyfriends as these
stereotypically male past times.
SEXUALITY, ETHNICITY AND MISE-EN-
SCENE
 We used a close up of the girls face
to show how young she is and her
ethnicity.
 We also used long shots to show the
clothes she was wearing. This
allowed the audience to see that she
was from an average background as
the clothes she was wearing were
quite casual. This goes against the
stereotype that this age group
where’s Vans, Converse etc. and
represents them in a professional
manner.
CAMERA ANGLES
 We used a point of view shot of
looking from a height this could
mean the girl is contemplating
killing herself and highlights teen
suicide, which is a major problem in
todays society. It makes the
audience ask: What is on her mind
and what is she thinking of?
However it could be argued that
teenagers are weak and think the
only option is to end their life
rather than fight on through their
problems.
