California goldenrod is a robust perennial herbaceous plant native to western North America from coastal sage scrub to yellow pine forest. It spreads via creeping rhizomes to form large colonies, with dark green to gray-green fuzzy stems and leaves. In summer and fall it produces showy clusters of small yellow flowers that attract pollinators. California goldenrod thrives in full sun to light shade with occasional summer water, providing welcome fall color and being a sensible substitute for non-native yellow asters and chrysanthemums. It is an excellent habitat plant that provides cover and food for butterflies, bees, and seed-eating birds and insects.
