2. Family
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
was born in 1840 in
Votkinsk, a small town in
present-day Udmurtia. His
father, Ilya Petrovich
Tchaikovsky, was an
engineer who served as a
lieutenant colonel. His
mother, Alexandra Andreyevna
d'Assier, was a granddaughter
of the French sculptor.
Tchaikovsky had four brothers
and two sisters.
3. Education and
marriage
Tchaikovsky graduated from
the Imperial School of
Jurisprudence in Saint
Petersburg and the attended
Saint Petersburg Conservatory.
In July 1877, Tchaikovsky
married his former student,
Antonina Miliukova. Almost as
soon as the wedding ended,
Tchaikovsky realised he had
made a mistake. The couple
lived together for only two and
a half months before the
emotional crisis forced him to
leave. He and Antonina
remained legally married but
never lived together again nor
had any children.
4. Composer and
conductor
Pyotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky was a
Russian composer whose
works
included symphonies,
concertos, operas and ballets.
He also worked as Professor of
Music Theory at the Moscow
Conservatory. He was the
first Russian composer
whose music made a
lasting impression
internationally, which he
upheld with appearances
as a guest conductor later
in his career in Europe and
the United States.
5. Death and Legacy
On 6 November 1893 Pyotr
Ilyich Tchaikovsky died in Saint
Petersburg, at the age of 53. The
official cause of death was
reported to be cholera, most
probably contracted through
drinking contaminated water
several days earlier. He is buried
at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Tchaikovsky was a musical
genius. He is well known all
around the world. Some of
his works are among the
most popular theatrical
music in
the classical repertoire. It’s
because of people like
Tchaikovsky that I’m proud to
be Russian.
