It is important for critical thinking, lifelong learning and being a responsible citizen. The lesson encourages being more compassionate by being softer, more patient, kind, empathetic and respectful.
Bringing Compassion into Healthcare Education: A guiding workshop with teachi...
This workshop was held on the 19th of December 2013, prepared and delivered by Peter Vermeiren and myself for the educators of the Julius Center for the exploration and implementation of Compassion within Pharmacotherapy. (Apologies for the confusing mix of Dutch and English)
Our goal was to give information and insight on Compassion, exploring its definition and share existing knowledge, science and exercises. In the afternoon we facilitated a brainstorm and strategy session, using appreciative inquiry, on how compassion can have a more substantial role within the curriculum and in which form it would take place.
Within this slide deck we have added youtube video's of concepts and methodologies that we take inspiration from. During the workshop we shortly explained it however for those interested you can find the entire videos within the slides. These include people with whom we work with and concepts we believe embody the work we do within Compassion for Care.
This includes:
- Simon Sinek: His infamous TED talk about "Starting with Why" and actually how to inspire others to action using the golden circle (Why - How - What)
- Andy Bradley: Closing the Compassion Gap: We use an exercise asking our participants which attributes they would wish to see in their care - taker and this was taken from inspiration from Andy Bradley.
- Karen Armstrong: Her winning the TED Prize, sharing the concept of the Charter for Compassion and the video with the Charter
- Thupten Chimpa: Someone who worked very closely with the Dalai Lama sharing the "science" behind compassion.
- Richard Davidson: A very rich presentation on much of the research that has taken plan and is being done on Compassion and meditation.
- Marina Abramović: The beautiful art of 'really' being present and how she responds to the surprise of someone she loved dearly coming to visit her at her exposition.
- Chade-Meng Tan: Sharing his insights on his book "Search Inside Yourself" and how Google too is working towards a more compassionate manner of working.
- Paul Gilbert: Sharing his findings and his model on the 'Caring-Compasionate mind'. We use this to bridge between attributes of a healthcare professional and that of the ones we would wish to have when we are in need of one.
- Kirsten Neff: On the The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self Compassion with an exercise that one can do.
- Dr Robin Youngson: and a beautiful description of his work and book "Time to Care". Its a manual for healthcare workers on how to work compassionately.

Rick Body - Is Compassion a Patient Right?
Rick Body’s SMACC Chicago talk 'Is compassion a Patients Right?' takes us on a journey of emotions in critical care.
Body, initially focuses on a study conducted within his hospital of 125 patients, who were interviewed when admitted to their emergency department and when they where discharged. From the study it was depicted that, what patients truely wanted was simple human intervention; reassurance, friendliness, explanation, basic care. These responses were then coded into 5 different themes to depict how patients believe their suffering should be addressed;
1. Emotional distress
2. Physical symptoms - including pain (but not restricted to)
3. Information - Included reassurance and explanation
4. Care - Basic care
5. Closure - patients want to put this horrible episode behind them
Body notes that patients are telling us that they want something positive from us. They don’t want us to focus on what we shouldn’t do. They want us to be thinking about what we can do to help… suggesting that if we follow the above ‘EPPIC' we could provide more compassionate care. The problem is this is not compassion as compassion is an emotion and needs to be felt.
Body then explores whats stopping us (care providers) from showing compassion? Sighting the The Good Smaritian Study, The By Standers Affect, Unclear of Who is Responsible, and Personal Reasons.
Body believes that patients don’t have a right to compassion as it is an emotion and means to suffer with but asks for health providers to be emotionally intelligent. Explaining that emotional Intelligence recognises that there is a difference between traditional intelligence, IQ and our ability to form effective forms of interpersonal relationships. Siting the 5 domains of emotions intelligence as;
1. Know your emotions - know what we are feeling
2. Manage your emotions - cool rational and object in the rests room, show emotion with patients and family
3. Motivating ones self
4. Recognising emotions in others - empathy
5. Handling Relationships - interpersonal Skills - relate to other people
Body suggest that these are skills that can be developed as ones life goes on and by building skills in emotional intelligence that maybe one can be both a compassionate and effective doctor.
Body concludes by asking the question 'How are you going to care more for your patients?'

PPC includes different levels of care like intensive care for critically ill patients requiring constant monitoring, intermediate care for patients needing moderate nursing assistance, and self-care or convalescent areas for patients who are physically independent. Implementing PPC provides benefits for doctors, nurses, hospitals, and patients by allowing for specialized care tailored to individual needs and more efficient use of resources. Effective planning and preparation is needed when implementing PPC to address issues like staff acceptance and patient transfers between units of care.
