An Old Woman Entreating Emperor Trajan
to Avenge Her Son

emperor Trajan's encounter with an old

Dante among the Proud
Gustave Dore, c.1868
Dream of the eagle,
entrance to Purgatory, the
Proud
15th c. manuscript
Sometimes one sees a corbel, holding the weight
of roof or ceiling, carved in human shape
with chest pressed tightly down against its knees,
so that this unreality gives real
anguish to one who sees it—this is how
these souls appeared, and how they made me feel.
Purgatory 11.130-135
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass
against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
[For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.]
- U.S. Book of Common Prayer, 1928
(Matthew 6:9-13)
