Declaration:
1. All of the information I shared here is from my own knowledge and experience.
2. I am a big fan of Emerald Insight. You can find Emerald Insight
https://www.emerald.com/insight/ and then put my full name “Boon Cheong Chew”. After that,
you will be able to get my papers there (not many but will get growing for sure). If you are also an
Emerald journal writer in Management field, let’s collaborate. My email bcchew@utem.edu.my
3. All the full academic papers which I have worked with my students/colleague, you can get it
here https://independent.academia.edu/BCChew. Please cite my work in your paper, as this will
motivate me to keep on sharing and writing.
4. Materials which I used from other Scholars, I will cite it clearly in my presentation slides.
The scope of this sharing
• You are able to find a lot of materials, explaining about Publication
Strategy.
• What makes mine different from the rest is, I am explaining from my
experience as a writer and also a reviewer.
• You can ask me a lot of questions along my sharing. I like our session
to be interactive.
• For those technical analysis of various journals, you can easily get it
from the respective journals.
The Flow of my sharing today
1. 6 steps: Research-Publication Strategy (for students, young
researchers)
2. Advanced strategy (for experienced researchers)
6 steps: Research-Publication Strategy
1st: To Begin
1.Read a journal paper: read a specific journal (which you target to publish your paper at this publisher) to familiarise with the guidelines,
expectation, learning the way of writing, comprehend the quality/standard. https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/our-services/authors
2.Develop a realistic publication target: quantity published in a year.
3.Prepare a project management tool: Gantt-Chart to manage your time well.
4.Find a helpful partner, set-up a team: establish a good relationship with your partner (potentially could be your co-author) who shares
the similar research-publication interest or expertise. He/she can give you feedback or language support.
5. Authorship and Co-authorship: 1, 2, 3, 4 authors are great. Put their names because of their real contribution (research ideas,
method, contend expert, supervisors). Too many authors in your paper show inefficiency and would create some free-riders.
6. Expertise of yours and your co-authors: Think seriously about your expertise, your co-author expertise and the
future development.
2nd: Designing your research
1. Generate an “interesting” research idea: formulating an interesting research idea through
discussion, media scanning, observation, looking at the past journals/research papers/dissertations.
2. Make an impactful contribution to the paper: (i) innovative (ii) highly practical
contribution, (iii) knowledge contribution (theoretical gap filled), (iv) new method applied.
research which
(a) Merely consumes the knowledge, (b) replicates the previous research in other context, (c) aims to validate the similar
results/outcomes, (d) adding a new variable for relationship testing while the correlation are predictable = WEAK PAPER
3. Utilise the relevant and updated theory:
theory which is (a) too old, (b) too broad (mixing too many theories/disciplines), (c) too much (not focus) = WEAK PAPER
3rd: Drafting your paper
1. Synchronise your paper: Ensure all the sections in your paper must be coherent and consistent.
2. Define your keywords clearly within your research context
3. Research method and data analysis must be explained sufficiently: to
ensure the reliability of a research.
4th: Writing Your Paper
1. Write for an international reader: This is because journal readers are from many countries.
2. Make sure your paper is best written: no spelling errors, punctuation errors, grammatical
errors, avoid complex words.
3. Tables and diagrams should be self-explanatory
4. Avoid using unfamiliar acronyms:
UFO: Unidentified Flying Object. You use it as United Football Organisation?
COVID: Coronavirus Disease. You use it as Company Visitor Identity?
NASA, IQ, HIV, IVF, DNA
5th section: Proofreading and Checking
1. Ask for English proof-read.
2. Getting feedback from your co-author(s): getting feedback from your co-author(s),
be open-minded and willing to learn. Improve your work before submitting.
6th: Submitting Your Paper
1. Be careful on predatory journals.
https://predatoryjournals.com/journals/
2. Learning from rejection: Accepting rejection. Take the comments positively as a learning process to
refine your paper. After all the corrections made, submit to a new journal.
Advanced Publication Strategy
Objectives of Publication
University:
(a) Compete with other universities (we should collaborate
honestly/genuinely)
(b) Visibility
Individual:
(a) Communication
(b) Expertise development
(c) Recognition among peers
(d) Knowledge transfer
(e) Citations
(f) Promotion
Being Ethical
1.Never republish your paper to other journals: overlapping publication or
duplicate publication. Bad for your reputation.
2.Strictly adhere to the ethical professional code: respect authorship, no
plagiarism, no overly done on self-citation, no fabrication/falsification of
results
Reflection
1.Novelty (the quality of being new, original, innovative), practical are
what the journal publisher is looking for.
2.Write your papers with the evaluative mind (how my reviewers are
going to think/react if I write like this)
3. Write your papers with the readers’ mind (how my readers are going to
cite my paper)
Journalist vs Scientist
Collaboration
1.Collaborate with the industry experts
2.Submit your paper to the most cited journal (publisher) in your
