Activity #1 Activity Name: Find That Letter!
Location: School gym
# of Volunteers: 2
FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 3
Objective: This activity will help to promote phonemic
awareness for K-2nd graders and provide additional spelling
practice for 3-5 graders. When parents join in, they will get a
chance to see if their child is having difficulty with this skill.
Description: Plastic balls marked with letters will be
scattered throughout the gym floor. Two students will go at
one time. A volunteer will show each student a word on an
index card. Student will be asked to find the corresponding
letters using a plastic bin. One family member can help the
student. Whoever finds the most words correctly win the
challenge.
Activity #2 Activity Name: Words Maker
Location: Mrs.Lucas’ kindergarten room
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: This activity will challenge students to create as
many words as possible using the given magnetic letters. By
partnering up with families, students will get to improve
their vocabulary and spelling at the same time.
Description: Two students will compete to see who can
create the most words using magnetic letters. Each student
will get his/her easel and a bin of letters. Families can join in
the activity and volunteer will track the number of words
created within a given time frame (10-15 minutes).
Activity #3 Activity Name: Storyboard
Location: Ms. Hird’s kindergarten room
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: This activity allows students to practice their
retelling/sequencing skill. Students will also get to practice
the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading,
writing) which is especially beneficial for EL learners.
Description: A volunteer will read the story, Amelia Makes
a Movie by David Milgrim. Then, students will orally retell
the story to their families before drawing and writing it on a
storyboard. After they’re done, students can share their
storyboard with the group.
Activity #4 Activity Name: Make Your Own Bookmark
Location: Ms.Kossy’s art room
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: Students and families will be more engaged and
motivated to read when they get to create and use their
personalized bookmarks.
Description: Students and families can use construction
papers, markers, glitters, stickers, ribbons, stamps etc. to
create and decorate their own bookmarks. Volunteers will be
around to assist everyone.
FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 4
Activity #5 Activity Name: Can You Guess?
Location: Cafeteria
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: Students and families will get a chance to have
fun while exercise their brain muscles. The best part about
this activity is that families can duplicate this idea and play
the game at home with their children.
Description: Based on the same concept as the game,
Hangman, one volunteer will act as the “host” and the other
volunteer will write on the board. There can be two or three
teams (students and families) competing each round. The
host will give the topic to the participants and each team will
then take turn asking for a letter. The team that can correctly
guess the answer wins the game.
Activity #6 Activity Name: Movie
Location: Library
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: Students will get a chance to learn about compare
and contrast after watching a movie that was created based
off a book. Families can use this opportunity to have a
conversation with their children about the similarities and
differences they noticed.
Description: Students and families will get to watch
Charlotte’s Web directed by Gary Winick. After the movie,
volunteers will pass out a compare and contrast graphic
organizer to students and families, so they can jot down what
they noticed. For students who have not read the book, they
can draw or write their favorite part of the movie.
Activity #7 Activity Name: Read Under the Stars!
Location: Mrs.Winter’s class
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: To increase students’ motivation and family’s
involvement in reading.
Description: Volunteers will provide flashlights and books
that students and families can choose from. The classroom’s
lights will be shut off and students will be able to see glow-
in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of the room. They can then
turn on the flashlights to read the books with their families.
Activity #8 Activity Name: Go Fish Rhyme Time!
Location: Mrs.King’s class
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: Provide students with opportunities to practice
their phonological awareness. Families can join in on this
activity to support and guide students.
Description: Students can choose from two different
rhyming games. One game is based on the ‘Go Fish’ rule
FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 5
where two students get six rhyming cards each. They open
any pair of cards that rhyme and keep the rest in their hands.
For example, one player can ask the other player, “Do you
have a card that rhymes with cat?” If that other player does,
he/she will hand over the card. If not, that player will say,
“Go fish.” Volunteers can provide older students with a
more challenging set of rhyming cards.
Activity #9 Activity Name: Scavenger Hunt
Location: Mr.Shields’ class
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: To give students and families an opportunity to
learn more about the different genres of books.
Description: Volunteers will give students a list of books
hidden around the classroom. Families and students are
asked to “hunt” for all the books on the list before the time is
up to win a prize.
Activity #10 Activity Name: Race to the Finish!
Location: Hallway right outside 4th/5th grade classrooms
# of Volunteers: 2
Objective: To give students a chance to practice parts of
speech.
Description: Two students will be “racing” using office
chairs. A volunteer will ask part of speech question such as,
“Which of these words is a noun?” When the volunteer
finished reading all the words, students will need to raise
their hands to identify the correct answer. If a student gives a
correct answer, one family member can push that student’s
chair and roll it all the way to the finish line.

Activity #1 Activity Name: Find That Letter! Location: School gym # of Volunteers: 2
  • 3. FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 3 Objective: This activity will help to promote phonemic awareness for K-2nd graders and provide additional spelling practice for 3-5 graders. When parents join in, they will get a chance to see if their child is having difficulty with this skill. Description: Plastic balls marked with letters will be scattered throughout the gym floor. Two students will go at one time. A volunteer will show each student a word on an index card. Student will be asked to find the corresponding letters using a plastic bin. One family member can help the student. Whoever finds the most words correctly win the challenge. Activity #2 Activity Name: Words Maker Location: Mrs.Lucas’ kindergarten room # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: This activity will challenge students to create as many words as possible using the given magnetic letters. By partnering up with families, students will get to improve their vocabulary and spelling at the same time. Description: Two students will compete to see who can create the most words using magnetic letters. Each student will get his/her easel and a bin of letters. Families can join in the activity and volunteer will track the number of words created within a given time frame (10-15 minutes). Activity #3 Activity Name: Storyboard Location: Ms. Hird’s kindergarten room # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: This activity allows students to practice their retelling/sequencing skill. Students will also get to practice the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) which is especially beneficial for EL learners. Description: A volunteer will read the story, Amelia Makes a Movie by David Milgrim. Then, students will orally retell the story to their families before drawing and writing it on a storyboard. After they’re done, students can share their storyboard with the group. Activity #4 Activity Name: Make Your Own Bookmark Location: Ms.Kossy’s art room # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: Students and families will be more engaged and motivated to read when they get to create and use their personalized bookmarks. Description: Students and families can use construction papers, markers, glitters, stickers, ribbons, stamps etc. to create and decorate their own bookmarks. Volunteers will be around to assist everyone.
  • 4. FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 4 Activity #5 Activity Name: Can You Guess? Location: Cafeteria # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: Students and families will get a chance to have fun while exercise their brain muscles. The best part about this activity is that families can duplicate this idea and play the game at home with their children. Description: Based on the same concept as the game, Hangman, one volunteer will act as the “host” and the other volunteer will write on the board. There can be two or three teams (students and families) competing each round. The host will give the topic to the participants and each team will then take turn asking for a letter. The team that can correctly guess the answer wins the game. Activity #6 Activity Name: Movie Location: Library # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: Students will get a chance to learn about compare and contrast after watching a movie that was created based off a book. Families can use this opportunity to have a conversation with their children about the similarities and differences they noticed. Description: Students and families will get to watch Charlotte’s Web directed by Gary Winick. After the movie, volunteers will pass out a compare and contrast graphic organizer to students and families, so they can jot down what they noticed. For students who have not read the book, they can draw or write their favorite part of the movie. Activity #7 Activity Name: Read Under the Stars! Location: Mrs.Winter’s class # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: To increase students’ motivation and family’s involvement in reading. Description: Volunteers will provide flashlights and books that students and families can choose from. The classroom’s lights will be shut off and students will be able to see glow- in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of the room. They can then turn on the flashlights to read the books with their families. Activity #8 Activity Name: Go Fish Rhyme Time! Location: Mrs.King’s class # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: Provide students with opportunities to practice their phonological awareness. Families can join in on this activity to support and guide students. Description: Students can choose from two different rhyming games. One game is based on the ‘Go Fish’ rule
  • 5. FAMILY FUN NIGHT: A PLANNING GUIDE 5 where two students get six rhyming cards each. They open any pair of cards that rhyme and keep the rest in their hands. For example, one player can ask the other player, “Do you have a card that rhymes with cat?” If that other player does, he/she will hand over the card. If not, that player will say, “Go fish.” Volunteers can provide older students with a more challenging set of rhyming cards. Activity #9 Activity Name: Scavenger Hunt Location: Mr.Shields’ class # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: To give students and families an opportunity to learn more about the different genres of books. Description: Volunteers will give students a list of books hidden around the classroom. Families and students are asked to “hunt” for all the books on the list before the time is up to win a prize. Activity #10 Activity Name: Race to the Finish! Location: Hallway right outside 4th/5th grade classrooms # of Volunteers: 2 Objective: To give students a chance to practice parts of speech. Description: Two students will be “racing” using office chairs. A volunteer will ask part of speech question such as, “Which of these words is a noun?” When the volunteer finished reading all the words, students will need to raise their hands to identify the correct answer. If a student gives a correct answer, one family member can push that student’s chair and roll it all the way to the finish line.
