The document summarizes a study that assessed the psychological skills of 70 Indian gymnasts in relation to their performance levels. The study measured skills like imagery, self-awareness, motivation, and goal setting using a psychological skills assessment questionnaire. Analyses found no significant differences in skills between above average and below average gymnasts, contradicting other research showing good performers have stronger skills. The researcher suggests gymnasts and coaches lacked understanding of the questionnaire due to language barriers. Improving psychological training for Indian gymnasts is recommended to help them apply mental skills and enhance performance.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a psychological skills training program on
psychological skills of female basketball players. These psychological skills consisted of imagery, relaxation,
focusing, refocusing, goal setting, competition planning, fear control, and stress reactions. The sample
consisted of 12 semi-elite female basketball players from Nasr team in Tehran city that purposely were
selected in 2014 (with the mean age of 23/58± 1/67 years old). All Subjects completed the OMSAT-3
questionnaire that has been confirmed by SanatyMonfared& et al. (2006) in Iran. After giving pre-test, the
subjects divided in two experimental and control group, and then 12-weeks interventions (including,
imagery, relaxation, goal setting, self-talk, and focus training) were done. After 12 weeks, the subjects of two
groups completed the OMSAT-3 questionnaire for post-test. Then, the data were analyzed with descriptive and
inferential statistics methods. The result of dependent t-test for comparing the pre-test and post-test scores
showed that there is a significant difference between scores of pre- and post-test of experimental group (t=
4/98, p<0/01). As a result, it is concluded that, these interventions have positive effects on subscales of
foundation skills, psycho-somatic skills, and cognitive skills from pre-test to post-test for experimental
group versus control group.

ABSTRACT: The present study aims to investigate the effects of a Psychological Skills Training(PST) program on mental toughness of skillful female volleyball players. The statistical population used in the study consists of two league 1 female teams in Tehran province, Iran with total members of 22 individuals. From them, 11 individuals were selected randomly for each control group and experimental group. The data related to mental toughness were collected using Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire of Sheard and Golby (2009). The subjectsof the experimental group performed psychological practices for 8 weeks, 2 sessionsa week or total of 15 sessions such that each session included 30 minutes of the program. No program for psychological skills was delivered to control group. After the 15th session, an after-test was taken through SMTQ from experimental group based on the pre-test. Statistical methods in two descriptive and inferential levels and Kolmogorov– Smirnov statistical tests and T-test were used for analyzing data. The obtained results indicated that volleyball players who participated in Psychological Skills Training program have earned meaningfully higher scores in all subscales compared to the control group. Finally, it can be concluded that a course on Psychological Skills training has a meaningful effect on mental toughness of female volleyball players.

The intention of the study was to analysis the effects of physical exercises and minor games on Speed in
mentally challenged Children. To achieve this purpose of the study 45 mild category mentally challenged
Children were selected from SATYA Special School Puducherry. Children chronological age from 15 to
20 and their IQ ranged from 60% to 70%. They were divided into three groups physical exercise group
(PEG) was considered as Group I, minor games group (MGG) considered as group II and control group
(CG) considered as Group III. Group I and II undergone training for 18 weeks. The training was
scheduled for three days in a week for an hour (4pm to 5 pm) and CG was not undergone the training.
Random group design was used for this study. Speed is the criterion variable which was measured by 50
mts dash. The test was taken before and after the training period. The collected data were statistically
analysed by Analysis Covariance (ANCOVA). All the data were analyzed using SPSS statistical
package. The level of confidence was fixed at 0.05 level of significance. From the results of the study it
can be concluded that there is no significant difference between CG and PEG on speed. Thus, the above
result clearly indicates that the speed in the children belonging to the MGG has considerably improved in
comparison to the PEG and CG.
Sport psychology is an interdisciplinary science that draws on knowledge from many related fields including biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology and psychology. It involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. In addition to instruction and training of psychological skills for performance improvement, applied sport psychology may include work with athletes, coaches, and parents regarding injury, rehabilitation, communication, team building, and career transitions.
Comparative Study on Self Confidence among University Level Football, Kho-Kho...IOSR Journals
Abstract: Self-confidence is the belief that one can successfully perform or desired behavior. It is an important
factor to achieve our ultimate goal. Football, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi are very famous game in India involving
various physical fitness components like speed, co-ordination, power, strength, agility etc. The Researcher was
very keen to find out the self-confidence level of North Bengal University Football, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi
players before attending the inter university tournament. The purpose of this study was to compare the selfconfidence
level between Football, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi players. Eighteen each male University level
Football, Kho-Kho and Kabaddi players from North University (Mean Age 23) were volunteered in this study.
Hardy and Nelson (1992) questionnaire was used to measured the self confidence level of the subjects. One way
analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to find the overall mean significance difference of three groups. List
significance difference (LSD) post-hoc test was used to measure the paired mean significance difference. The
result indicated there was a mean significance difference in self-confidence level between Football, Kho-Kho
and Kabaddi players of North Bengal University. The researcher was concluded that Kho-Kho players are more
confident than the Football and Kabaddi players before attending the respective inter university tournaments.

Psychological techniques can be used to help people perform more effectively
— this concept represents a major focus of sport psychology throughout its history. Psychological Skills Training, including, Arousal Regulation, Imagery, Self-Confidence, Goal Setting, and Concentration, provides the coach and the athlete with a choice of "tools" to apply in a given situation. Our chief focus is on teaching students how psychological skills can be trained or developed in sport and exercise participants.
How are psychological techniques used to help people perform more effectively?
The chief focus of the prior four weeks centered on teaching how psychological skills can be trained or developed in sport and exercise participants.
By using the tools discussed in weeks 1-4 individuals can use the power of their mind to build mental toughness and take sport performance to new levels.
Have you ever wondered why athletes with so much talent never come close to reaching their potential, while other athletes with far less athletic ability achieve great success?
Many experts believe that sport performance is 75% -90% mental. This gives a clear indication that athletes who are better prepared mentally are the ones that are successful. As sports continue to evolve, it will be even more important for athletes to spend more time training their minds.
Key Point:

fearless approach
, enhance your athletic skills, end performance anxiety,
remain calm and relaxed
while playing or competing, and access inner resources of
strength and power.
By tapping into the mind's tremendous power, athletes are more able to simply allow their body to operate on pure instinct. As a result, you will be more consistent in your play and have more opportunities for peak performances.

Psychological skills training (PST) is the systematic and consistent practice of mental or psychological skills for the purpose of enhancing performance, increasing enjoyment, or achieving greater sport and physical activity self-satisfaction (Weinberg & Gould, 2011, p.248). Some of the methods and techniques for PST include, goal setting, attentional control, relaxation and stress management, and attribution training. Coaches and athletes know how important physical skills are and how they need to be regularly practiced and refined through many repetitions but psychological skills need to be practiced as well. Psychological skills help an athlete to maintain focus and concentration, regulate arousal levels, enhance confidence, and maintain motivation. These skills are just as important as physical skills. Psychological skills training is often neglected because of a lack of knowledge, perceived lack of tie, or a belief that psychological skills are innate and can’t be taught (Weinberg & Gould 20 ...

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and
coaching efficacy of university coaches. Therefore, 120 coaches (60 male and 60 female) were
selected randomly and completed emotional intelligence (Syberyashring, 1986) and the coaching
efficacy questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential (Pierson
correlation, and single-variable and multivariate regression) with SPSS 16 software (P<0.05).
Suggested hypothesis showed that the scale and subscales of coaches’ emotional intelligence are
associated with the scale and subscales of coaching efficacy. The coaches’ emotional
intelligence was considered as a good predict of coaching efficacy. Generally speaking, there is
a significance relationship between emotional intelligence as a variable affecting the coaching
efficacy.

Nowadays, it is known that the most important necessary condition in training top sportsmen and
sportswomen depends on excellent coaches. Huge investments in the field of coaching as well as
employing effective and efficient coaches for the clubs represent the necessity of great attention
in choosing efficient coaches. An efficient coach should have several characteristics. Coaching
efficacy consists of four main subscales that is creating incentive game strategy, effective
technique and processes in character developing. By creating incentives coaching can influence
their players’ skill and mental states [1]. The game strategy is related to the coaches ability in

Introduction and Problem to be investigated
Although there have been a lot of research on the effects of mood on the performance of athletes, there have been little research done to investigate the antecedents of mood and the ways in which athletes tend to deal with deep mood states that may deter performance in the field. Mood is s very importance predictor of the performance of athletes in sports. Thus, this research aims at investigating the ways in which athletes use the self-regulation methods to enhance positive mood and improve their performance.
Purpose: to investigate how athletes use self-regulation methods to regulate their moods to improve performance
Justification: There has been plenty of research on the links and relationship between mood and performance in athletes. However, there is limited research on the antecedents of mood and how athletes tend to deal with issues of deep states of mood that may hinder their performance. Mood is an essential factor in performance of athletes, hence need for the study.
Problem Statement
There are various strategies which are used by athletes to promote positive mood and reduce bad mood. States of depression, anger, fatigue, vigor. tension and confusion impair performance of athletes in the field. However, athletes have developed several strategies of eliminating these states to enhance their performance while they are in the field. However, there have been no substantial study on the various ways which employees used to eliminate bad mood and promote positive mood. The objective of this study is investigating the strategies used by athletes in regulating their intense moods to enhance their performance in sports. Understanding these strategies is essential for sports behavioral psychologists. It can be used to design various interventions. These interventions can be applied to improve performance in the field. The assumption of existence of the relationship between performance and mood is obvious. However, the level of the relationship should be examined since there are other major factors that influence the performance of an athletes apart from mood. The study also aims to investigate the existence of causal relationship between performance of athletes and mood. It will also examine the relationship between the factors that cause bad behavior and the strategies that are used by employees to reduce negative moods
Overview of the Study
The research will employ the statistical analysis tools to analyze the data that will be collected. The research will collect data from two hundred and seventeen athletes sampled from the general population of athletes in various sporting events. This wi ...

The purpose of the present study was to test the psychometrics of the types of goal scale which was developed in three phases. In the first phase focus group were conducted with 6 elite sportspersons and discussed with 15 experts for item selection and content relevance. The second phase set out to identify latent factors in which 312 athletes were involved. The aim of third phase was to test the psychometrics by focusing on internal consistency of the items of identified factors of the types of goal. The results of an exploratory factor analysis provided a two-factor solution that accounted for 53.70 % of the overall variance (a) time bound goals (short-term, long-term & combined short-term and long-term goals) (3 items) (b) mixed combination of goals (process, performance & outcome goals) (3 items). Results from third phase supported the internal consistency of the scale and subscales of the types of goal.

Psychological skills and performance of indian gymnasts
1. Psychological Skills And Performance Of Indian Gymnasts
Malika Sharma, Ph.D Research Scholar, Department Of Physical Education And Sports Sciences, Delhi
University, India.

Abstract
Psychological skills account for significant amounts of athletic performance. Studies reveal that the good
performers are good in psychological skills as compared to poor performers. So in the light of this, present
study assessed level of psychological skills in relation to Indian gymnast’s performance, using Psychological
Skills assessment scale questionnaire which measured the skills such as imagery, self-awareness, self-
confidence, attention, motivation, arousal regulation, goal setting and psychic energy management, the data
collected from 70 artistic gymnasts from different universities those who participated in Intervarsity
Championship in Patiala, 2010. The athlete sample comprised 28 above average gymnasts and 42 below
average (age range 17 to 27 yrs). Analyses revealed that there is no significant difference among the above
average and below average gymnasts. Whereas studies show that, high potential athletes have high
psychological skills-level. Though, in present study the above average gymnasts did not report any amplitude in
the psychological skills. The reason could be the casual approach towards filling the questionnaire and
inability of the subjects to understand the statements of the questionnaire due to the poor understanding of the

Psychological Skills are the mental or psychological qualities or abilities which are determinant for the purpose
of enhancing performance, increasing enjoyment, or achieving greater sport and physical activity self-
satisfaction in the competitive sports. PST program helps the athletes to have tremendous abilities to psych
themselves up for competition to manage their stress; to concentrate intensely and to set challenging but realistic
goals, to have the ability to visualize themselves being successful and then doing what they visualized as a part
of training and to excel in the world of competitive sports (Murphy & Tammen, 1998). PST may be taught and
learned. There are three phases to PST: Educational Phase, Acquisition Phase and Practice Phase.
A great deal of research effort has concentrated on attempting to predict performance from psychological
variables. Through evidence it has been proposed that sport psychologists can enhance performance by
enhancing psychological skills of the players. Some of the most important mental skills are goal
setting, relaxation, visualization, self-talk, self-awareness and control, concentration and confidence.(Robert S.
Weinberg and Daniel Gould, 2003)
As in other sports, Gymnast’s success or failure also results from the combination of physical and mental
abilities. Most coaches consider that sport is at least 50% mental. In most competitions players win or lose
depending on how they performed that particular day. (Robert S. Weinberg and Daniel Gould, 2003).
Physical ability being fairly equal, the winner is usually the gymnast who has better mental skills. (Calmels, C.,
& Fournier, J.1999) Considering fluctuations in gymnast’s day to day performance, why does it happen that in
first day competition gymnasts can’t do anything wrong and on the other day he can’t do anything right?
Actually it’s not the lost of physical skills in one day but it’s their mental skills that fluctuates.
The researcher has tried to find out the level of psychological skills of the Indian gymnasts in relation to their
performance levels, so that the Indian gymnastics which is gaining its raised platform at the national and
international level due to their hard, regular and vigorous training, can do much better to gain the higher results
not only by one Indian gymnast but some more who are almost equally capable by their physical skills and
abilities. Scientifically It is often said that gymnastics is 90% mental and 10% physical (Howard, 2011) If that is
true, certainly there should be some training time devoted to the mental aspects of the sport and psychological
training tools. So the study of psychological aspect of the Indian gymnasts may be helpful to understand their
2. mental side and prepare the mental training program to train them to overcome fears and blocks and perform to
their potential under pressure. Keeping in view the above mentioned aspects it is necessary to assess the
psychological skills level of the Indian gymnasts, to make it possible to understand their psychological skills
level and prepare an effective PST program to enhance their performance.
Procedure & Methodology
Selection of Subjects
A total of seventy artistic male gymnasts were taken as the subjects. The subjects were selected from Allahabad
university, Calcutta university, Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, Gwalior, Punjab
University, Bareli University, Pune university, Guru Nanak Dev University, MUDU and Delhi university. The
age range of the subjects was between 17 to 27 years. The gymnasts were divided into above average and below
average on the basis of their performance in Intervarsity championship held at Patiala, 2010. The average
performance score of 70 gymnasts was 37.05%, so scholar took 40% as the average and divided gymnasts into
Above Average those who scored above 40% of the points and Below Average, those who scored below 40%.
Selection of Variables
In order to assess the psychological skills of the Indian gymnasts, the following eight psychological skills were
selected for the purpose of the study, namely, Imagery, Self-awareness, Self-confidence, Attention, Motivation,
Arousal Regulation, Psychic Energy Management and Goal setting.
Collection of Data
In the present study, data was collected from the subjects represented in gymnastics Intervarsity Championship held
at Patiala, Punjab in 2010.
Criterion Measures
The Psychological Skills Assessment scale developed and authenticated by Sharma, Tiwari and Kaur (2008) was
adopted to assess the psychological skills of the gymnasts.
Administration of Questionnaire
The research scholar made personal visit to the gymnastics Intervarsity championship held in Patiala, 2010, and
distributed the questionnaire to the respondents. The purpose of the study was clearly explained to the respondent
before administering the questionnaire. The respondents were requested to read the instructions carefully before
giving the final response to the questions.
Statistical Techniques
For the purpose of the present study following statistics was employed step wise:
1. Descriptive statistics
2. Comparative statistics
Results & Discussion

DEPENDENT
VARIABLES
MEAN AVERAGE
PERFORMANCE LEVELS
ABOVE AVERAGE BELOW AVERAGE
Imagery 27.71 28.24
Self-awareness 24.89 26.19
Self-confidence 18.00 18.97
Attention 11.75 12.04
Motivation 11.75 12.23

Gaol-setting 19.07 20.09
Psychic energy management 14.75 16.35
Total 137.32 142.76
Note: Above average total gymnasts=28, below average total gymnasts = 42 and total gymnasts in the study i.e
28+42= 70.
The above table indicates that the dependent variable Imagery has mean average of 27.71 above average performers
and 28.24 below average performers. The dependent variable Self-awareness has mean average 24.89 of above
average performers and 26.19 of below average performers. The dependent variable Self-confidence has mean
average of 18.00 of above average performers and 18.97 of below average performers. The dependent variable
Attention has mean average of 11.75 of above average performers and 12.04 of below average performers. The
dependent variable Motivation has mean average of 11.75 of above average performers and 12.23 of below average
performers. The dependent variable arousal-regulation has mean average of 9.39 of above average performers and
8.97 of below average performers. The dependent variable Goal-setting has mean average of 19.07 above average
performers and 20.09 below average performers. The dependent variable Psychic energy management has mean
average of 14.74 of above average performers and 16.35 of below average performers and the total mean of above
average performers is 137.32 and below average performers is 142.76.
A number of studies have been done in foreign countries to assess the relation between performance and the
psychological skills and it has been found positive in most of the studies. Studies reveals that the good
performers are good in psychological skills as compared to poor or average performers. A number of studies
have compared successful and less successful athletes in terms of their psychological skills and characteristics.
Summarising this research, (Williams and Krane, 2001) it had concluded that more successful athletes were
characterised by higher confidence, greater self-regulation of arousal, better concentration-focus, an in-control
but not forcing-it attitude, positive thoughts and imagery and more determination and commitment. The
successful athletes also achieved peak performance by employing the mental skills of goal setting, imagery,
arousal regulation and management, thought control and competitive plans, coping strategies and mental
preparation routines.
Conclusion
4. The analysis of data reveals that the above average gymnasts psychological skills are weaker than the below
average gymnasts, where as the available literature has shown the positive relationship between performance
and the psychological abilities. So the results of the presents study are contradicting with the available literature,
the researcher could conclude that the reason behind this could be the casual approach towards the filling the
questionnaire and inability of the subjects to understand the statements of the questionnaire due to the poor
understanding of the Hindi and English languages as the mother tongue of the subjects were different.
In the present study after analysing and screening the data, it show that the above average performers are weak in
their psychological skills as compared to the below average performers. It can be revealed that the Indian Gymnasts
are not using the psychological skills training in their training sessions or competitions, as neither the players nor
the coaches are well trained and equipped with psychological skills. Research Scholar by herself interviewed some
elite Indian gymnasts Ashish Kumar (CWG Medallist), Alok Ranjan, Iqrar Hasan and Rakesh Patra and Coaches
during the India Olympics Camp, held in Delhi. Through the interview it could be understood that coaches have
lack of knowledge, concept and uses of psychological skills and the even the elite level Indian gymnasts are
unaware of the application and use of psychological skills in their training as have never been exposed to the
psychological skills training to enhance their performance level.
So it is necessary to provide the coaches and the Indian Gymnasts with psychological skills training program so
that they become efficient to apply those skills such as Relaxation techniques, Self-confidence, Self-awareness,
Self-talk, Motivation, Attention, Concentration, Psychic energy management, Imagery etc into their training
sessions to enhance the performance levels.
