OCD is a chronic neuropsychiatric illness that affects 1-3% of the population. SSRI medication is the first line of treatment, and CBT can be added or used as first line treatment. Psychoeducation involves educating patients and family members about OCD as a brain illness requiring long-term treatment. It aims to break myths about OCD not reflecting personality or character, and emphasize it as a medical condition requiring treatment. Educating family members on supporting treatment adherence rather than symptom accommodation is important for treatment success.
