Figuring out why you’re speaking
3 types of speakers in the world:
1. Who make things happen
2. Who watch things happen
3. Who wonder what happened
If you want to avoid wondering what happened,
you better know why you’re speaking in the first place
Two effective ways to
find out why
you’re speaking
1. Look at the function of your talk
(to inform, persuade, inspire, or entertain?)
2. Examine your motivation for speaking
and the audience’s motivation for
listening.
( have you been asked or ordered to speak?, do you
want to speak?, does the audience want to hear you?,
have they been forced to hear you?, will they listen
to you?)
Setting specific goals
Some examples of goals you may have:
- Wanting to build your credibility
- Wanting to get the audience to agree
with your position
- Wanting to make the audience
understand something
- Wanting to make the audience laugh
- etc
(write out your goals before you write your speech)
Getting the essential
information
Ask these questions about the event so you’ll know
the tone of the meeting & what will be expected
from you :
1. What’s the purpose of the meeting?
2. Is it regularly scheduled meeting or a special event?
3. Is it a formal or informal event?
4. What’s the atmosphere – very serious of light?
5. Is your talk the main attraction?
Getting the essential information
Ask these questions about the format to make sure your speech
content is the right length, style and fits properly into the
meeting:
1. What’s the agenda for the day?
2. What’s the format for your speech : a general session; a
breakout session; a panel discussion; before, during or after a
meal?
3. What time do you begin speaking?
4. How long are you expected to speak?
5. Will there be other speakers?
6. When will they be speaking?
7. What will they be speaking about?
8. Will any of them be speaking in opposition to your views?
9. What occurs before your speech?
10. What occurs after your speech?
Getting the essential

Ask these questions about the location to
make sure that everything you need is
available and arranged the way you prefer:
1. Where will you speak?
- inside or outside?
- What type of room: banquet, meeting,
auditorium, and so on?
2. How will the room be set up?
3. What audio/visual and sound equipment is
available for you?
4. Will there be a podium/table/platform?
Getting the essential information
Ask these questions about the audience to get an idea of the
mood they’ll be in when you speak and how they’ll react to you:
1. What’s the size of the audience?
2. Is the audience required to attend?
3. Are the people there to hear you or for some other reason?
4. How much do they know about your topic?
5. Will they be drinking?
6. Will they be walking in and out as you speak?
7. How have they responded to other speakers?
8. What other speakers have they heard?
9. What do they expect from you?

  • 2. Figuring out why you’re speaking 3 types of speakers in the world: 1. Who make things happen 2. Who watch things happen 3. Who wonder what happened If you want to avoid wondering what happened, you better know why you’re speaking in the first place
  • 3. Two effective ways to find out why you’re speaking 1. Look at the function of your talk (to inform, persuade, inspire, or entertain?) 2. Examine your motivation for speaking and the audience’s motivation for listening. ( have you been asked or ordered to speak?, do you want to speak?, does the audience want to hear you?, have they been forced to hear you?, will they listen to you?)

Setting specific goals Some examples of goals you may have: - Wanting to build your credibility - Wanting to get the audience to agree with your position - Wanting to make the audience understand something - Wanting to make the audience laugh - etc (write out your goals before you write your speech)
  • 5. Getting the essential information Ask these questions about the event so you’ll know the tone of the meeting & what will be expected from you : 1. What’s the purpose of the meeting? 2. Is it regularly scheduled meeting or a special event? 3. Is it a formal or informal event? 4. What’s the atmosphere – very serious of light? 5. Is your talk the main attraction?
  • 6. Getting the essential information Ask these questions about the format to make sure your speech content is the right length, style and fits properly into the meeting: 1. What’s the agenda for the day? 2. What’s the format for your speech : a general session; a breakout session; a panel discussion; before, during or after a meal? 3. What time do you begin speaking? 4. How long are you expected to speak? 5. Will there be other speakers? 6. When will they be speaking? 7. What will they be speaking about? 8. Will any of them be speaking in opposition to your views? 9. What occurs before your speech? 10. What occurs after your speech?
  • 7. Getting the essential information Ask these questions about the location to make sure that everything you need is available and arranged the way you prefer: 1. Where will you speak? - inside or outside? - What type of room: banquet, meeting, auditorium, and so on? 2. How will the room be set up? 3. What audio/visual and sound equipment is available for you? 4. Will there be a podium/table/platform?
  • 8. Getting the essential information Ask these questions about the audience to get an idea of the mood they’ll be in when you speak and how they’ll react to you: 1. What’s the size of the audience? 2. Is the audience required to attend? 3. Are the people there to hear you or for some other reason? 4. How much do they know about your topic? 5. Will they be drinking? 6. Will they be walking in and out as you speak? 7. How have they responded to other speakers? 8. What other speakers have they heard? 9. What do they expect from you?
