2. • Prophet – a person God calls to speak His word to
others
• Prophets do not “foretell the future”; they are
given the grace to understand what could happen
if people act in a certain way
• God called on the prophets to remind the people
about their covenant with Him
• The prophets encouraged people to turn away
from sin and turn toward God
3. • In the Old Testament, there are three Major
Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekial
• There were several Minor Prophets, including
Elijah, Amos, Hosea and Micah
• All spoke God’s word and guided the people

5. • Elijah was an advisor to King Ahab
• Ahab’s wife Jezabel worshipped Baal, a false god
• Elijah proved that Baal was fake, angering Jezabel
• Elijah was protected by God; he had called the
people back to belief in the One True God
6. • When Elijah’s work was finished, he passed his
spirit to a prophet named Elisha; a fiery chariot
then carried Elijah’s spirit away.
• It is a tradition in Jewish homes to leave a cup
and an empty chair at the Seder meal for Elijah’s
return.
7. • Hosea’s book in the Old Testament uses the
symbolism of a marriage to describe the
relationship between God and His people
• Hosea is known as the Prophet of the Faithful
God
8. • Amos was called on by God to remind the people
to care for one another
• The wealthy and powerful had stopped taking
care of the poor and had fallen into worshipping
false gods
• Amos told them that if they continued their idol
worship and injustice, they would be destroyed
9. • Amos was recognized as a true prophet after his
prophesy cam true and Israel was conquered by
Assyria in 722 BC.
10. • Micah was another “minor prophet”
• The term “minor” refers to the fact that these
books in scripture are shorter; the work of the
prophets was equally important.
• Like Amos, Micah was a prophet of social justice,
calling for the people to treat each other fairly
• Micah was a contemporary (living at the same
time) of the great prophet Isaiah.
