Verizon is selling 1.6 million access lines in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont to FairPoint Communications. As part of the sale, Verizon must provide FairPoint with network, retail, billing, and other data to transition the customers. This complex project involves extracting data from multiple IT systems. The data extracts will be delivered in three phases to FairPoint to become the new owner of the customers and their data. The extracts must follow specific guidelines around format, timing, archiving, and other factors to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.

1. In January - 2007 Verizon announced the sale of roughly 1.6M access lines in Maine,
New Hampshire, and Vermont to FairPoint Communications. Project Nor'easter is
focused on completing activities related to this sale. One of the requirements, of this
sale, is that Verizon provide Fairpoint Communications with the data (Network, Retail,
Billing, etc) they need to load their systems and "assume" ownership of these
customers. The objective of the data extracts are for Main, New Hampshire and Vermont
regions only. This is a complex project as there are multiple IT portfolios impacted due to
the large number of systems (primarily East apps).
The underlying principle for the data extraction exercise is to make the data to be
delivered as the Golden Source for the buyer organization. There are 3 key milestones
for this project so it will be broken down into 3 phases as follows:
• Extract 1 Phase
• Extract 2 Phase
• Final Extract Phase
The extracts to be created will need to consider the following –
• Media - Types of media covered are tape, CD, DVD, email, SFTP, etc.
• Format - format or layout of the extract will vary from application to application
and will not make any conversions of data.
• Repeatability - Data extracts have to be created in a way that can be reused with
detailed process documentation
• Timing - Extracts will be created at month end after all month end processing has
been completed.
• Copies - All test extracts will require only one set of data abd Final extracts will
require two sets and a backup copy.
• Archiving - All data must be archived using normal Verizon retention periods.
• Deletion - Data need to be non destructive and possibly Verizon systems will be
purged after the final extract.
• History - Normally Verizon maintains the archived history which if the buyer
rerquests will be provided after determining the extent case by case.
• Layouts - Record layouts and Data dictionaries where available.
