Truly smart buildings will leverage knowledge that resides outside its walls. Introducing programs that allow real-time adjustment of demand in addition to supply when wholesale prices are high or when grid reliability is in question or high demand is expected. Two-way communication between the Grid & the Building where software conversation actually makes the Grid & the Building talk to each other. The ICT sector can boost energy efficiency and enable emission reductions in a number of ways: • Standardize • Monitor • Account • Rethink • Transform Energy efficiency measures contribute to an organization’s sustainability goals, such as tracking and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But if the data is trapped within the building management system, executive level decision-makers may not find it. Base-load analysis is a useful exercise to determine where in the building to focus time and money and it is the starting point for all our work. Once we can see the time-distribution of the energy within the building we can prescribe a course of low cost remedial actions to bring “out of hours” energy consumption under control. When a building is fitted with sub-metering it is then possible to pinpoint where the majority of “out of hours” consumption is occurring. During this presentation we introduce the topic of analysing baseloads and we show you how the Workplace Footprint Tracker can be used for performing the analysis.

Many air handling units supply a volume of fresh air into a building at a constant rate and consume a considerable portion of the building energy. This rate was determined during the design stage originally to provide enough fresh air per person and to deal with a number of other environmental factors. Perhaps it is time to reassess this set-up and take advantage of energy saving opportunities. In the last session of our six-part series, we will be sharing our experiences and the approach our clients are using to save energy associated with their ventilation systems. We have also teamed up with Chris Mulholland from Critical Airflow, who will be presenting data and case studies from a number of projects on "demand-based" ventilation control systems. In a typical building base-load analysis will identify the server room, if one is present, at the top of the list of “out of hours” consumption. In recent years server rooms have been built nearly always with mechanical cooling. In many cases we find that the cooling plant is consuming as much energy as the servers. David Green, Head of Workshops at the University of Cambridge, will present the Department of Engineering server room journey. He has transformed one of his large server rooms by using free cooling and cold aisle warm aisle containment and learnt a lot along the way.

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second). Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.
