Business Excellence

Operating in the international arena, Tata International meets the exacting quality standards
of its customers in terms of both products and services. At our leather manufacturing facility
at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, all our units are ISO 9001 and 14001 certified – the first in the
Asian leather industry to attain the ISO certifications.

We have streamlined our processes to be in line with the Tata Business Excellence Model
which is based on the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award.
We drive business excellence through continuous improvement, innovation and teamwork
across the organisation, with a special focus on environment protection. Our indigenously
developed world-class leather effluent treatment plant is the only one of its kind in the
country, and has been awarded several prestigious National awards and patents.

Awards and Certification
Tata International's efforts have been well- recognised by the industry and the government of
India, as a recipient of several prestigious awards and international certifications

   1. The Modeurop Award for introducing the latest generation of Leather Fashion
      Colours & Designs every year.
   2. Best Exporter Award from the Council of Leather Exports, every year from 1984 –
      till date.
   3. The Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award in 2000.
   4. ISO 14001 Certification by RWTUV CERT of Germany in 2002.
   5. The Rajiv Gandhi Environmental Award for Clean Technology was won in 2003.
   6. The Madhya Pradesh State Pollution Control Board’s Environmental Award for Best
      Environmental Practices in 2005.
   7. Won The TERI Corporate Environment award for environment excellence in
      2005.
   8. Awarded an eco-labelling license by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) : ECO-
      MARK in 2005.
   9. SA 8000: 2008 Accredition : Tata International Limited (leather footwear and leather
      garments businesses) is a SA 8000 : 2008 accredited company by TUV, Mumbai; wef
      April, 2010. This accredition is valid for three years.
      The company adheres to the Social Accountability 2008 International Standards as
      prescribed by Social Accountability
      International, USA. For the benefit of our stakeholders the standards are linked for
      ready reference.

Globally driven, award winning and community conscious, the Leather and Leather Products
business unit (BU) truly epitomises a modern Tata company.

India’s leading leather and leather-products exporter and supply chain integrator - this BU
offers comprehensive leather and leather products solutions right from the concept
presentation stage to product design development, to manufacturing in low-cost economies
and then final delivery.

This is supported by a well integrated IT enabled ERP-SAP set-up, offering an advantage in
the product supply and delivery management for the customer.

       Our Leather BU manages one of the world's largest tanneries at Dewas, Madhya
       Pradesh, design studios in Italy and Spain and modern manufacturing facilities in
       India, China and Indonesia that produce a wide range of leathers, shoes, garments and
       leather articles.
       The BU is a valuable partner and supplier to global brands like Betty Barclay, Peter
       Keiser, Marks & Spencer, GCI, Mango, Pierre Cardin, Hush Puppies, Escada, Gabor,
       Naturalizer, Zara, Grenson, Ambiorix, Samsonite, Danier and leading Indian retailers.
       It has established a highly flexible, globally spread supply chain for sourcing leather,
       footwear, garments and leather goods.
       The R&D department of this BU has made internationally acknowledged
       breakthroughs in the production of chrome free leather and processing of solid waste.
       The BU was the first leather company in Asia to receive ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and
       the Eco-Mark certification. All its products are free from banned chemicals.
       The BU, located at Dewas was the first leather manufacturing unit in India to secure
       the Eco-labelling (Eco-Mark) License by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and
       can use the Eco-Mark for its finished leather products. This has opened up several
       opportunities to market environmentally friendly leather products to our retail
       customers
       Added to this, the Tata Brand value of Quality - a strong consumer proposition;
       presents a huge opportunity for the global retail market.
       For efficient customer response, Tata International has instituted marketing offices in
       Hong Kong, London and Italy. The presence of these global marketing hubs provides

       The Finished Leather BU is the largest in India and among the leading tanneries of the
       world. The in-house product development cell and design studios spread across Italy,
       Spain, China and India ensure that we keep with the latest fashion trends and service
       the requirements of the industry.
Our constant representation at MODEUROP in Italy and successive awards for the
       innovative leather shades produced every year, speaks of the high standard we set for
       ourselves in Leather R & D.
       Our elaborate range of finished leather includes full aniline and semi-aniline finishes,
       patent leather, suede and nubuck - which can be used in a wide variety of classic or
       trendy leather products.
       It is also one of the few plants in the world with an expertise in producing colourful
       patent leathers.
       The BU currently sells about 80 million sq. ft. p.a. worldwide - in all animal skins that
       cater to the leather fashion industry.
       In keeping with the sensitivities of our environmentally conscious customers, our R &
       D has recently patented a complete vegan, mineral free, Herbal leather




       Tata International is the country’s largest exporter of leather garments and it's product
       range includes jackets, coats, skirts and trousers, handbags, wallets, cases, luggage
       and travel accessories. The Garment business unit creates chic and stylish leather
       garments for leading fashion houses like Zara, Escada, Mango, La Bella, Yuppie and
       it's major clients are spread across countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, France,
       Belgium, Japan, Canada, Sweden and Denmark.
       It has the capacity to produce 30,000 leather garments per month in every possible
       range, cut and style with the aid of world-class manufacturing processes, special
       sample lines and a design studio to meet customers’ requirements. All the leather
       products & accessories are elegant designs crafted from high-quality leather for style
       and absolute convenience.
       This BU is seeking exclusive fashion tie-ups with high end, niche fashion labels and
       is ready with dedicated production lines, to take this business to the next level of
       expertise and craftsmanship

                                             Dewas
The Tata International’s footwear manufacturing facility in India is based in Chennai and
Dewas.

       Chennai
       This facility has the capacity to manufacture 2,000 pairs of shoes per day, and is
       manufactures elegant men’s shoes and comfort ladies shoes for leading brands and
       retailers.

       Ladies Shoe Factory: In 2008,Tata International inaugurated a new footwear
       manufacturing plant dedicated to manufacturing shoes for ladies, with a capacity to
       produce 10,000 pairs a day. Employing 2,000 girls, this plant is also an extension of
       Tata International’s community initiative to provide training and employment
       opportunities to women from under-privileged sections of the society.

Men’s Footwear Plant: With a capacity of producing 800 pairs per day, this plant
caters exclusively to the niche segment of high end brands and betailers. The unit
manufactures SOW, i.e., Sewn on the Last construction of footwear, a craft left with
only a few in the world. Tata International also has a Goodyear Welted footwear unit
that has a capacity to produce 1,000 pairs of shoes per day.

  • 1. Company Profile The company has evolved into an international entity with a global reach in international trade and encompasses the entire value chain from supply chain integration to facilitating third country trade by setting up strategic alliances or wholly-owned subsidiaries with a focus on certain geographies. Tata International has taken on various value-added roles and has stakes in a cross-section of businesses. Its two main business lines are - Leather & Engineering (including Automobiles distribution in Africa). Business Excellence Operating in the international arena, Tata International meets the exacting quality standards of its customers in terms of both products and services. At our leather manufacturing facility at Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, all our units are ISO 9001 and 14001 certified – the first in the Asian leather industry to attain the ISO certifications. We have streamlined our processes to be in line with the Tata Business Excellence Model which is based on the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award.
  • 2. We drive business excellence through continuous improvement, innovation and teamwork across the organisation, with a special focus on environment protection. Our indigenously developed world-class leather effluent treatment plant is the only one of its kind in the country, and has been awarded several prestigious National awards and patents. Awards and Certification Tata International's efforts have been well- recognised by the industry and the government of India, as a recipient of several prestigious awards and international certifications 1. The Modeurop Award for introducing the latest generation of Leather Fashion Colours & Designs every year. 2. Best Exporter Award from the Council of Leather Exports, every year from 1984 – till date. 3. The Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award in 2000. 4. ISO 14001 Certification by RWTUV CERT of Germany in 2002. 5. The Rajiv Gandhi Environmental Award for Clean Technology was won in 2003. 6. The Madhya Pradesh State Pollution Control Board’s Environmental Award for Best Environmental Practices in 2005. 7. Won The TERI Corporate Environment award for environment excellence in 2005. 8. Awarded an eco-labelling license by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) : ECO- MARK in 2005. 9. SA 8000: 2008 Accredition : Tata International Limited (leather footwear and leather garments businesses) is a SA 8000 : 2008 accredited company by TUV, Mumbai; wef April, 2010. This accredition is valid for three years. The company adheres to the Social Accountability 2008 International Standards as prescribed by Social Accountability International, USA. For the benefit of our stakeholders the standards are linked for ready reference.   • 4. Globally driven, award winning and community conscious, the Leather and Leather Products business unit (BU) truly epitomises a modern Tata company. India’s leading leather and leather-products exporter and supply chain integrator - this BU offers comprehensive leather and leather products solutions right from the concept presentation stage to product design development, to manufacturing in low-cost economies and then final delivery. This is supported by a well integrated IT enabled ERP-SAP set-up, offering an advantage in the product supply and delivery management for the customer. Our Leather BU manages one of the world's largest tanneries at Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, design studios in Italy and Spain and modern manufacturing facilities in India, China and Indonesia that produce a wide range of leathers, shoes, garments and leather articles. The BU is a valuable partner and supplier to global brands like Betty Barclay, Peter Keiser, Marks & Spencer, GCI, Mango, Pierre Cardin, Hush Puppies, Escada, Gabor, Naturalizer, Zara, Grenson, Ambiorix, Samsonite, Danier and leading Indian retailers. It has established a highly flexible, globally spread supply chain for sourcing leather, footwear, garments and leather goods. The R&D department of this BU has made internationally acknowledged breakthroughs in the production of chrome free leather and processing of solid waste. The BU was the first leather company in Asia to receive ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and the Eco-Mark certification. All its products are free from banned chemicals. The BU, located at Dewas was the first leather manufacturing unit in India to secure the Eco-labelling (Eco-Mark) License by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and can use the Eco-Mark for its finished leather products. This has opened up several opportunities to market environmentally friendly leather products to our retail customers Added to this, the Tata Brand value of Quality - a strong consumer proposition; presents a huge opportunity for the global retail market. For efficient customer response, Tata International has instituted marketing offices in Hong Kong, London and Italy. The presence of these global marketing hubs provides a competitive edge for making a difference in the market . TIL’s infrastructure is supported by the industry’s top notch technicians, designers and professionals and is designed to cater to needs of the renowned brands and retailers across the world The Finished Leather BU is the largest in India and among the leading tanneries of the world. The in-house product development cell and design studios spread across Italy, Spain, China and India ensure that we keep with the latest fashion trends and service the requirements of the industry.
  • 5. Our constant representation at MODEUROP in Italy and successive awards for the innovative leather shades produced every year, speaks of the high standard we set for ourselves in Leather R & D. Our elaborate range of finished leather includes full aniline and semi-aniline finishes, patent leather, suede and nubuck - which can be used in a wide variety of classic or trendy leather products. It is also one of the few plants in the world with an expertise in producing colourful patent leathers. The BU currently sells about 80 million sq. ft. p.a. worldwide - in all animal skins that cater to the leather fashion industry. In keeping with the sensitivities of our environmentally conscious customers, our R & D has recently patented a complete vegan, mineral free, Herbal leather Tata International is the country’s largest exporter of leather garments and it's product range includes jackets, coats, skirts and trousers, handbags, wallets, cases, luggage and travel accessories. The Garment business unit creates chic and stylish leather garments for leading fashion houses like Zara, Escada, Mango, La Bella, Yuppie and it's major clients are spread across countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, Canada, Sweden and Denmark. It has the capacity to produce 30,000 leather garments per month in every possible range, cut and style with the aid of world-class manufacturing processes, special sample lines and a design studio to meet customers’ requirements. All the leather products & accessories are elegant designs crafted from high-quality leather for style and absolute convenience. This BU is seeking exclusive fashion tie-ups with high end, niche fashion labels and is ready with dedicated production lines, to take this business to the next level of expertise and craftsmanship Dewas The Tata International’s footwear manufacturing facility in India is based in Chennai and Dewas. Chennai This facility has the capacity to manufacture 2,000 pairs of shoes per day, and is manufactures elegant men’s shoes and comfort ladies shoes for leading brands and retailers. Employing 2,000 girls, this plant is also an extension of Tata International’s community initiative to provide training and employment opportunities to women from under-privileged sections of the society.

The unit manufactures SOW, i.e., Sewn on the Last construction of footwear, a craft left with only a few in the world.
