The Moving Towards a Healthier You program was created by Emma Martin in 2015 to teach middle school students at Oakland Middle School about healthy lifestyles. The program runs for two four-week sessions each school year, reaching over 600 students so far. Led by Emma Martin and pre-nursing student volunteers, students are encouraged to make small, weekly changes to integrate health into their daily routines. Plans are in place to expand the program to additional schools to educate over 1,200 students about nutrition, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.

Urban Promise Academy made changes to improve the nutritional quality of foods offered at breakfast and lunch, started growing their own foods in a school garden, and worked to influence healthier eating habits for students and their families.
At West Oakland Middle School, a school garden provided students experiential nutrition education and influenced families' food choices. Cooking classes and a backpack food program also aimed to improve healthy eating habits for students and their families.

Changing School Food Environment
Fremont High School piloted a "Grab-N-Go" breakfast program where students could pick up a bagged breakfast on their way into school and eat it in class. This increased participation in the breakfast program and improved students' eating habits.
Urban Promise Academy made changes to improve the nutritional quality of foods offered at breakfast and lunch, started growing their own foods in a school garden, and worked to influence healthier eating habits for students and their families.
At West Oakland Middle School, a school garden provided students experiential nutrition education and influenced families' food choices. Cooking classes and a backpack food program also aimed to improve healthy eating habits for students and their families.

School health services provide comprehensive preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative services to school children, teachers, and staff. They aim to raise health awareness in future generations. School health services began in India in 1909 but were underdeveloped until the 1960s when state governments began implementing school health and feeding programs. The objectives of modern school health programs are to promote positive health, prevent diseases, diagnose and treat disorders early, follow-up on identified issues, and provide a healthful school environment. Common health problems addressed include malnutrition, communicable diseases, worm infestations, dental issues, mental health problems, skin problems, eye problems, and ear problems.

ProgramSummary
- 1. Moving Towards a Healthier You Program Summary Moving Towards a Healthier You is a public health program created by Junior Emma Martin that was implemented into the Columbia public school system in the fall of 2015 and has continued thus far. The program visits Oakland Middle School for two four-week sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring. Each session includes 16 active teaching sessions with the children. Emma Martin the Moving Towards a Healthier You Chairwoman directs the program, and pre-nursing SNA members teach the lessons. This program teaches middle school students about what a healthy lifestyle is, side effects from an unhealthy lifestyle, and how to make small positive changes in their life to make a big impact on their health. Little changes are made each week by the students, which they are encouraged to keep for that week and integrate it into their daily routine. This program has 23 dedicated pre-nursing students who volunteered over 32 hours in the Columbia public school system in the 2015-2016 academic year, reached over 600 middle school students at Oakland Middle School, and exposed children to different kinds of foods and exercises to implement into their lifestyles. Plans to expand this program are being executed currently by networking to different schools to incorporate our program. Our tentative schedule for the fall of 2016 is to expand to another middle school along with our current location and reach over 1,200 students. The mission of our program is to teach the next generation how to live a healthy lifestyle. By implementing this program into middle schools locally we are progressing towards a healthier Columbia community and creating future advocates for public health.
