Programmed learning

PROGRAMMED LEARNING
 Programmed learning refers to an instructional method that involves the
systematic presentation of educational content through carefully designed
instructional materials. It is a self-instructional approach that guides learners
through a series of structured steps, allowing them to acquire knowledge and
skills at their own pace.
PRINICIPLE OF BEHAVIORISM
 This method of teaching is often based on the principles of behaviorism,
particularly the ideas of reinforcement and repetition. The materials are designed
to be self-instructive, providing clear and concise information along with
opportunities for active learning and practice. By breaking down complex topics
into smaller, manageable units, programmed learning helps learners progress
through the content in a logical and structured manner.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL
 In programmed learning, the instructional materials are typically organized into
small, self-contained units or frames. Each frame presents a specific concept or
piece of information, followed by a question or problem that assesses the
learner's understanding. The learner responds to the question or completes the
task, and immediate feedback is provided to reinforce correct responses and
address any errors.
AIM OF PROGRAMMED LEARNING
 Programmed learning in the method of teaching aims to promote independent
learning and self-paced progress. It allows learners to take control of their own
learning process and provides immediate feedback to support their learning and
mastery of the subject matter. The method can be implemented using various
instructional tools and technologies, including printed materials, computer-based
programs, or online platforms.
ADVANTAGES OF PROGRAMMED LEARNING
SELF PASING
 Students have the flexibility to learn at a pace that is comfortable for them. They
can review and revisit materials as needed, allowing for a deeper understanding
of the content before moving on. This self-paced learning promotes a sense of
autonomy and responsibility for their own learning process.
ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT
 Programmed learning materials are designed to actively engage students in the
learning process. The materials often include interactive elements such as
questions, exercises, and problem-solving tasks, encouraging students to actively
participate and apply their knowledge.
IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK
 One of the key benefits of programmed learning is the provision of immediate
feedback. Students receive instant feedback on their responses, allowing them to
reinforce correct answers and address any misconceptions or errors immediately.
This timely feedback facilitates faster learning and helps students make necessary
adjustments.
CONSISTENCY AND STANDARDIZATION
 Programmed learning materials can be standardized, ensuring that all students
receive consistent instruction regardless of the teacher or learning environment.
This consistency is particularly beneficial in large classes or when multiple
instructors are involved.
DISADVANTAGES OF PROGRAMMED LEARNING
LIMITED INTERACTIVITY
 Programmed learning materials often lack the personal interaction and dynamic
exchange that can occur in a traditional classroom setting. This limited
interactivity can hinder opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and the
sharing of diverse perspectives, which are important aspects of the learning
process.
LACK OF ADAPTABILITY
 Programmed learning materials may not easily adapt to individual learner needs
or provide tailored instruction based on student progress. The standardized
nature of programmed learning can limit the ability to address the unique
learning styles, interests, and challenges of individual students.
LIMITED SCOPE FOR COMPLEX CONCEPT
 Programmed learning may not be as effective for teaching complex or abstract
concepts that require deeper understanding, critical thinking, and higher-order
cognitive skills. The step-by-step, linear structure of programmed learning
materials may not adequately address the complexity and interconnectedness of
certain subjects.
POTENTIAL FOR ISOLATION
 Programmed learning can sometimes lead to a sense of isolation, particularly if
students are primarily engaging with the instructional materials independently.
The absence of social interaction and peer-to-peer learning opportunities can
diminish the collaborative and social aspects of education.
CONCLUSION
 Overall, programmed learning can be a useful instructional method for certain
types of learning objectives and learners. However, it should be complemented
with other teaching strategies to create a well-rounded educational experience.
