  • #4 If you have ever dismissed the idea of joining a professional organization, reconsider! Professional organizations are an instant professional learning community whether you are at that organization’s conference or are using one of their services to update your knowledge or skill set. A professional organization is a group of people that are just as passionate as you are about a topic. Their function is to help you make connections and give you opportunities to develop relationships that can help you grow your career in a way that you cannot do alone. You never know when the connection you made on a webinar can help you find that dream job. At many conferences, like ISTE23, attendees walk away with resources that will help them continue to impact student learning and infuse their teaching with 21st century skills. • #5 The rapid pace of changing technology makes ISTE a valuable resource for teachers who wish to bring their classroom into the 21st century by incorporating the ISTE standards into their curriculum. Whether one is simply using the resources on the website, attending a conference, or participating in a webinar, teachers are exposed to a wide variety of tech tools that can be used in the classroom environment. Rather than using tech as a babysitter, users of the ISTE resources help teachers use technology purposefully to deepen student engagement, learning, and knowledge. If the educator is really into the ISTE resources, they can even choose to become ISTE certified. This certification is focused on practice not skills. Individuals seeking this certification will be designing programs for diversity, designing opportunities for personalized learning, and exploring equity in digital learning environments. The ISTE standards guide the creation of learning experiences. They serve as the competencies for learning and teaching with technology and are the roadmap for effective technology use in schools. The standards are updated to the latest research-based standards and best practices. The goal is to create students who are problem solvers, critical thinkers, innovators and effective collaborators. The learning library is where the user goes to seek out ideas and strategies on how to tackle a lesson. There are several learning formats to explore. Blog posts, Journals, and topic guides are just a few of the learning opportunities for the willing tech explorer. For those wanting to inhabit the same space as other educators who use technology in innovative ways, the Events link allows one to explore upcoming conferences and seminars connecting participants to colleagues around the world. The final tab to explore is the EdTech Providers tab. The resources on this page allow active community involvement in testing, selecting, and using ed tech. It allows providers to connect with educators to leverage their perspectives as they develop new solutions to problems. It also allows providers to put their product in the hands of the desired users.
  • #6 When it comes to learning, educators can pick the format from the vast library of learning opportunities. I chose to look at a blog that offered tips for making digital learning accessible for all students. The 5 simple steps allows the teacher to better connect with students who may have disabilities. The suggestions listed on this blog included writing alternate text for images so screen reader programs could read a website out loud for students who have reduced vision. The blog suggests helping visual learners retain content better and students who are hard of hearing by captioning videos. Along the same lines, transcribing podcasts allows those who are hard of hearing enjoy the show. The blog goes on to suggest structuring one’s website for ADA compliance making it accessible to everyone. It is important that the right tools, use Universal Design Principles to make content accessible to all. Having had deaf and blind students in my classroom, I have found these principles to be instrumental to student success. I even went to far to putting my tests in a format that were easy to machine read so my students could focus on the knowledge and not get stumped on the logistics of reading the material. The information on this slide cam from Krueger, N.. (2002, July 27). 5 Tips for making Digital Learning Accessible for all Students. • #7 I chose a podcast called The Edge ISTELive23 ISTE Excitement with Georgia, Jessica, and Matt because I am attending the ISTElive24 conference in June 2024. I wanted to know what to expect so I did not relegate myself to doing one thing repeatedly. One of the recommendations these three presenters and attendees made was to fill one’s schedule to the brim with a variety of learning opportunities from the seminars, to the playground, and creation lab. You are often allowed to take the items created in these spaces home and you are likely to meet more people who are on this same journey. The speakers also highly recommended attending the main stage events. You can meet your heroes there claimed one of the speakers. They mentioned that some of the people associated with Abbot Elementary were at the 2022 conference so the people that come to the stage are well known in the edtech field and some speakers are just fun and relatable. The final push was to attend the social and afterhours events. They can be as invigorating as hanging out at a dinner or playing board games. Most importantly, the three speakers said that attendees needed to get excited about being around people who are just as excited as themselves to be around like-minded people. That kind of excitement is contagious and no one should miss out on an opportunity to make a connection. That connection can become a life-long friend. Terlaje, G. Host. 2023, June 22. • #8 The final resource I explored was a webinar called Level up Your Workday with monotasking. I believe monotasking will be a helpful tool for my students who are so anxiety driven to relieve some of the added pressure of schoolwork. Through our advisory program I am charged with teaching students some life hacks and I think this is one they can use that will provide a great deal of benefit to them. I think it will help those with executive functioning issues be more functional and I think it will be a stress reliever for my anxiety driven students. Once something enters the brain, it stays there until it is completed, or it is deleted. If one does not complete the task, the brain will continue to interrupt thought processes until that item is finished. It is similar to having more than one or two tabs open at a time. Sometimes the computer freezes up because too many tabs are open and running. Just like the computer generates errors when too much is being done at one time, the human brain also starts to make mistakes. Monotasking allows one to focus on one thing at a time so that brain space can be freed to work on other things. One starts by prioritizing the task list. Write down everything that needs to be accomplished for the week, Color Code the tasks by priority. One way to do that is to separate tasks into categories like: Long term, Ongoing, it can wait Time block on the calendar by making an appointment giving a defined amount of time to complete that task. This time block shows where monotasking is to take place. Turn off distractions, email, notifications and the like. Set a timer for the duration of the task, sometimes two work better. Put on music to really help focus energy and time on completing the task. All information for this slide comes from the following webinar: Eckler, M. (2023, January 21) Level up your workday with monotasking. ISTE Expert Webinar. https://iste.zoom.us/rec/play/igat9MGlmUHCPtC0Jn6SUWXJN41EWFzRsixexQebOQpgJHNKB71mwAW8Z37uAAxuCwlhDzBut5lRVkYc.Fg4iTDVgewrsG7YB?hasValidToken=false&canPlayFromShare=true&from=share_recording_detail&continueMode=true&componentName=rec-play&originRequestUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fiste.zoom.us%2Frec%2Fshare%2FBMMaThTwecvUgCnKNfHpGnKDtPJtU15yvmRMokbrxDBmP6j9Cwckrb5x65IeKvG1.iaJW857oKNdg_TL0%3Flogged-in-via%3Dsso
  • #9 The benefits of monotasking are not limited to better sleep, less stress, fewer errors, better memory, and happiness. These are the commonly reported benefits of this type of work system. Everyone’s process looks different, the outcome is similar. Relief is what monotasking provides to those who practice this skill. I see applicability in students prioritizing the time within the school day to accomplishing tasks allowing for more restful and perhaps peaceful evenings at home. Eckler, M. • #10  There are several speakers at the ISTELive24 conference who are offering sessions on different aspects of AI use in education. Tara Nattrass is offering a collaboration session about the Best of Generative AI for Teachers and Leaders. As an early adopter of AI use in the classroom I am interested in learning more about this topic and the creative uses others have used to engage their students. I also like the fast passed format of the offered session. The objectives of the Nattrass session are to: Identify a variety of AI tools and understand their specific use cases to adopt in their practice and share with colleagues Share a particular use case of an AI tool that adds value to their work I am happy to share several AI use cases that made research material more accessible to a student. • #11 Dr. Ramesh Srinivasan builds up to the keynote address by featuring his discussion digital economies and the role K-12 education can play in guiding the development of a more democratic internet. That is not a connection I would have made. Also, part of this trio of speakers is Danni Washington who will discuss how to inspire student curiosity about science and leading meaningful change. I have had the opportunity to virtually meet Ethan Mollick in his capacity as an AI thought leader. I am very interested in what he has to say about classrooms of the future and what those look like. I think him closing out an inspirational session that includes Dr. Srinivasan and Danni Washington is going to be a remarkable beginning to an exciting day. The four speakers mentioned in this presentation are fairly representative of the speakers at the conference. The speakers are thought leaders, innovators, educators, and business leaders who seek to provide students with exciting learning opportunities. International Society for Technology in Education.
