2. APPLYING THEORIES
Applying Todorovs Theory- We applied to the theory of Todorovs to a film
that we liked. Mine was Harry Potter and we had to write the details into
the subheadings of what the film offered. This helped me explore what
his theory meant and allowed me to come up with similar ways to apply
it towards my opening.
The task enabled me to help create a idea of how to create impact on the
audience through the use of developing around the theory itself.
3. CLAUDE LEVI STRAUSS, ROLAND BARTHES,
PROPP AND TODOROV
I now find myself more comfortable with the different theories each theorist
offered and looking at the different terminology has added to my
understanding of how a film is constructed and different key factors
when applying different theories and knowledge of the use of
Characters, Narrative, Editing, Foley and Non-Foley (Diegetic and Non
Diegetic) Setting, Stereotypes and Plot line features such a twists.
I now know what to consider when making my own film opening and how to
create impact on the audience through the use of different aspects of
Film.
4. CHARACTER TYPES-PROPP
Character, I have discovered, is very important in the film conventions as
well as the narrative and today I applied Harry Potter to Propps
Character Theory. It helped me get a better understanding of the use of
different characters and their impact on the story as well as the
Audience. I was surprised to find that each character firmly sat into a
place within the character types within the theory and carried on to see
whether I could apply this to my own Summer work.
Again this deepened my understanding of character types and therefore
enabled me to add this in to my media opening.
5. BRIEF OTHER WORK
• Looked into the male Gaze theory and how women can be represented
within a movie.
• Looked at the reception theory by Stuart Mill.
• Convention and Connotations of each genre.
• Genre was analysed for a deeper understanding of how it could be used
in our movie openings.
