Editor's Notes

  1. ProLiant DL360 Gen11 Boot Options: - A major change to this server is the introduction of a brand new boot controller – the NS204i-u. This boot controller can be located in PCIe slot2 (hot-plug) or internally (non hot-plug). The NS204i-u contains 2x 480GB m.2 NVMe drives which are automatically configured for a RAID1 boot solution (i.e., does not require GUI or user intervention to configure) (NOTE: Previous generation was also auto configured). There are two versions of the NS204i-u and they are in different locations. One is a hot-pluggable, is located at PCIe Slot2 and has external access from the rear. (Stated differently, the NS204i-u is also available with external access with hot pluggable capability in the external mode, which means that controller can be pulled out and the drives can be replaced.) This would consume PCIe Slot 2 location, but does not use PCIe lanes. The other is non-hot-plug (secured) and is located internally. Stated differently, the NS204i-u can have the m.2 drives located internal to the system for device security (e.g., devices cannot mysteriously “walk away” … protection of the m.2 devices from intentional or non-intentional removal). I/O With the Gen11 version of the HPE ProLiant DL360, we have moved from PCIe 4.0 (which supports up to 64 lanes) to PCIe 5.0 (which supports up to 80 lanes) – an increase of 25% in number of lanes. In a nutshell, more lanes means more bandwidth and faster connectivity to surrounding infrastructure! This server now contains 2x OCP3.0 slots in the rear of the system, which allows for balanced networking capability and expansion of storage controllers or network cards without consuming a PCIe slot, which means those slots can now be available for more network or storage controllers, or for other adapters such as GPUs. In comparison, the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 Plus had 1x OCP slot and 1x AROC (for storage controller). With Gen11, the AROC slot was removed and a second OCP3.0 slot was added. In addition, there is an increase in number of lanes from x8 to x16, which means the Primary Rise can have up to 2 x16 slots and the Secondary Riser can have up to 1 x16 slots in FHHL or HHHL (LP) variation. Memory You can never have enough memory bandwidth … the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen11 supports DDR5, which helps feed this insatiable need for speed. While DDR4 DIMMs tops out at 3200 MT/s, DDR5 DIMMS deliver a 50% bandwidth increase to 4800 MT/s. (gigatransfers per second = GT/s, megatransfers per second = MT/s) Gen11 supports up to 4TB per CPU for a max total of 8TB per system when using 256GB DIMMS. Also Gen11 has 32 total DIMM slots or 16 DIMM slots per CPU. As an fyi, this has not changed from Gen10 Plus. Storage Controller Storage controllers in OCP3.0 form factor are being introduced, so now OCP storage controllers and NICs are now available. The two (2) OCP slots in the DL360 Gen11 are designed with the flexibility to support either CPU1 or CPU2 or both CPUs, in order to meet different customer workloads. The benefit to users of this server is that OCP is an open systems standard, whereas AROC was proprietary to HPE (but is now no longer available in Gen11). Intel’s VROC is available for creating RAID sets for NVMe and SATA devices. A license is required to use VROC for NVMe. When using VROC for direct attached SATA drive, this is included free in the CPU. Chassis While the chassis depth has slightly increased in LFF CTO servers, they still fit into standard racks that are commonly deployed today. In other words, no need for a new rack! Cooling For two processor configurations that exceed 271 watts, a new cooling system is available which offers better thermal conditions in a 1U form factor. This is a Closed-loop Liquid Cooling heatsink and Fan FIO kit. Last, but not least, the Gen11 version of the HPE ProLiant DL360 is based on the 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processor, which offers more cores when compared to 3rd Gen Intel Scalable Processor.
  2. ProLiant DL380 Gen11 Boot Options: - The next major change to this server is the introduction of a brand new boot controller – the NS204i-u. - This boot controller does not require or use up a PCIe slot or front drive slot, unlike previous solutions. The NS204i-u contains 2x 480GB m.2 NVMe drives which are automatically configured for a RAID1 boot solution (i.e., does not require GUI or user intervention to configure) (NOTE: Previous generation was also auto configured). The NS204i-u mounts in the rear of the system above the PSUs, which means that it no longer consumes a PCIe slot. The device is located close to the tertiary riser location, but does not prevent a system being configured with a tertiary riser. The two can co-exist. In addition, the NS204i-u can have the m.2 drives located internal to the system for device security (e.g., devices cannot mysteriously “walk away” … protection of the m.2 devices from intentional or non-intentional removal). The NS204i-u is also available with external access with hot pluggable capability in the external mode, which means that controller can be pulled out and the drives can be replaced. In addition, there is an increase in number of lanes from x8 to x16, which means the Primary Rise can have up to 3 x16 slots, the Secondary Riser can have up to 3 x16 slots. The tertiary riser also has 2 x16 slots. We still carry the traditional x8/x16/x8 risers, now there are field installable x16/x16/x16 risers. Memory You can never have enough memory bandwidth … the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 supports DDR5, which helps feed this insatiable need for speed. 3. The HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen11 is based on dual 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors. -The “a” in the HPE ProLiant DL380a stands for ‘accelerator-optimized’; in other words, it is optimized for GPU-intensive applications. This server offers a new front-end GPU cage that hosts up to four (4) double-wide (DW) GPUs in an industry-standard server. Some advantages and associated benefits of four DW GPUs … The use of 4 DW GPUs can provide many more teraflops of processing power - more than what a single GPU can provide. This increased power enables organizations to run larger, more complex models and tackle more challenging AI tasks with greater efficiency. In addition to raw processing power, AI applications also require high-bandwidth connectivity between the GPUs. Four double-wide GPUs provide ample interconnect bandwidth to ensure smooth data transfer between the GPUs. This is essential for multi-GPU training and parallel processing, which are critical for reducing the training time of AI models. The use of four double-wide GPUs in an industry-standard server allows organizations to easily scale their AI infrastructure as their needs change. This is because industry-standard servers are widely available and easy to upgrade, and the double-wide GPUs can be easily added or removed to meet the demands of the AI workload. The GPUs are located in the middle of the front of the server. With this design, it provides better thermal output – less heat is generated because the GPUs are not located near the other PCIe cards. For 4 DW GPU configurations, 2 neighboring PCIe cards are linked via an ‘NVLink High-Speed GPU Interconnect’, which is the same 900 GB/s in A100 and H100 The GPUs are powered by two dedicated power supplies. The main logic board has separate power supplies. Thus, the main logic board and the GPUs do not use the same power supplies. Memory You can never have enough memory bandwidth … the HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen11 supports DDR5, which helps feed this insatiable need for speed. While DDR4 DIMMs tops out at 3200 MT/s, DDR5 DIMMS deliver a 50% bandwidth increase to 4800 MT/s. (gigatransfers per second = GT/s, megatransfers per second = MT/s) Gen11 supports up to 3TB of memory at 4400 MT/s, and 2TB of memory at 4800 MT/s. There are a total of 24 DIMM slots or 12 DIMM slots per CPU. Storage Controller - Storage controllers are available in the OCP3 form factor. The benefit to users of this is that OCP is an open systems standard, whereas AROC was proprietary to HPE. - There are 2 storage support options – direct attach (DA) or connection via a tri-mode card When 8SFF are in DA mode, then 2 x16 OCP modules are free -Users can install the OCP modules they need or select 2 x16 FHHL PCIe Gen5 slots If using the tri-mode controller, 2 for factors are available - OCP or PCIe If using PCIe, 2 OCP cards and 2 FHHL PCIe Gen5 slots are available If using OCP is selected, 2 OCP slots (used by the tri-mode cards) or 4 FHHL PCIe slots are available DL380a also supports SR932i-p for balanced mode tri-mode card support -In this case up to 3 PCIe slots are free
  4. Front Drive Cage: - ML350 Gen11 offers 4 types of drive cages: new 12 EDSFF x4 NMVe; 8 SFF x4 NVMe; 8 SFF tri-mode drive cage; and the traditional 4 LFF SAS/SATA drive cage. 8. HPE now brings you the next generation of Compute, the HPE Synergy 480 (SY480) Gen11. This compute module is based on dual 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors, which offers more cores when compared to 3rd Gen Intel Scalable Processors. The new processors along with changes/improvements to the product line design (around the processors, memory, storage and boot options) affords a significant bump in performance over the HPE Synergy 480 Gen10Plus. From a memory perspective, the HPE SY480 supports DDR5 DIMMs with capacities up to 256GB and speeds up to 4800 MT/s. Each processor can fit up to 16 DIMMs (8 channels per processor, 2 DIMMs per channel). That’s a 50% increase in memory bandwidth when compared to the HPE SY480 Gen10 Plus. With the new design, we push once again to remove bottlenecks and increase data throughput or bandwidth from Compute to Fabric with PCIe 5.0 performance. This along with HPE Synergy Virtual Connect (VC) 100Gb network options increase the speed at which data is managed and provide opportunities to speed up the business transactions. The HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 Compute Module starts with a base chassis and then options get added. As with Gen10 Plus, the base chassis cannot sold by itself and requires a cage option, except if you plan on using the SY480 to Boot from SAN or boot from M.2. There are of five (5) storage cage options, which are now more flexible. If your needs change in the future, you can upgrade cages in the field along with memory and mezzanine options. SSD (SAS/SATA) and NVMe drives as well as an M.2 NVMe Hardware RAID1 Boot Option Kit are supported, all of which work with multiple drive cage solutions. (NOTE: The M.2 Boot Option Kit works with all drive cages (sits beneath drive cages, so drive cages can be used for additional local storage in the local server locations.) For more traditional implementations where boot and store capabilities need to be local to the server (e.g., typical VMware applications), 2- and 4-drive SFF premium models are available. For virtual storage applications like VMware vSAN, the 4-drive Direct Connect NVMe model is ideal. There are three (3) PCIe slots, which can be used as follows: Storage (in-Frame D3940 with SR416ie-m SAS Controller) 32Gb Fibre Channel (FC) for connection to HPE external storage solutions 10/25/50Gb Networking – Virtual Connect, Converged Network Adapters (CAN), or Ethernet

Virtualization The HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 uniquely supports high user density and delivers a high‑quality end‑user experience to help customers transform their digital workplaces through unprecedented levels of agility and lower costs. Data Management The HPE Synergy 480 Gen 11 is an ideal platform for data management requirements because it accelerates the deployment of environments, consolidates workloads, and simplifies management. The time savings and streamlined management allows IT teams to focus less time and energy on the set up of database environments and invest more time ensuring staff are sufficiently supported and internal IT needs are met quickly. Business Apps HPE Synergy is the ideal platform for customers who want to consolidate their applications to a single management architecture, to maximize the efficiency of their HANA test/dev environment, and to stand up a mission-critical production instance on HPE Synergy. In addition, HPE Synergy is a certified platform for SAP HANA, offering resource pools which can be customized at provisioning time for specific database needs. Hybrid Cloud For enterprise customers looking to accelerate their journey to Hybrid Cloud, HPE Synergy with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) is the solution of choice. Offering unique, integrated management, VCF running on HPE Synergy delivers an enterprise-ready private cloud solution that is flexible, automated, simple to operate, and cost efficient. In addition, its easy to deploy using HPE automation tools, which has been shown to be 20x faster from an application deployment perspective, thus reducing deployment times from weeks to mere days. There is also a higher degree of confidence with errors reduced and guesswork eliminated through an automated deployment data collection tool. All of this automation means that 100s of manual steps are eliminated making the process scalable and repeatable. This can only help to boost the productivity of a development team. Containers To enable container application delivery enterprise‑wide, IT organizations need a solution that can deliver containers at scale. Such a solution must include a production‑ready container system that supports high availability, scalability, and persistent storage as well as security lifecycle management, and monitoring. HPE Synergy meets these needs by offering a series of solutions that can accelerate adoption of containers from development through operations. Together with industry‑leading containers from Red Hat and Docker, HPE Synergy backed by HPE storage solutions - delivers fully integrated, enterprise‑grade container platforms. Software-Defined Storage The HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 is Composable Infrastructure certified for VMware vSAN, thus a perfect choice for Software-Defined Storage. A core value proposition of Software-Defined Storage is that it pools all local storage disks available on the hosts (compute servers) into a single data store shared by all compute servers. This is fundamentally well aligned with the fluid resource pools concept behind composability. Furthermore, with traditional rack servers, compute and storage do not generally scale independently, but with HPE Synergy, you can scale storage and compute separately.
