Problems of Well-Being
By Emily Maracle and Lauren Hulbert
Well- be-ing
This is the state of being comfortable, healthy, or
happy.
Sociological
Theory
Technology is its effects with our
minds, bodies and communities
There are so many factors that will
be discussed that are a big part of
everyone’s well-being. One thing
people do not realize with all of
these factors is that technology
plays a very big part in ALL of them.
Factors that Affect Well-being
There are multiple thing that affect our health and well-being.
1.Attitude and Optimism
2. Family and Friends
3. Career
4.Sleep Habits, Exercise and Nutrition
5.Money
6.Self-Esteem
Attitude and Optimism
*Your attitude affects you without you even
noticing it. In many ways your body can tell from
constant negative energy, or stress. Causing
high blood pressure, or digestive disorders.
*Stress makes you feel hopeless and helpless
causing your hormone balance to offset, making
it hard for your brain to make you happy. As well
as causing damage to the immune system.
*Technology affects this, sometimes in a
positive light, and sometimes in a negative.
Cyberbullying is a real issue these days, it
creates a lot of unwell individuals.
Being positive has many benefits, like faster
recovery from stress, fewer colds, better sleep
and an overall sense of happiness.
To do this a few things need to be
acknowledged,
Forgiveness
Grattitude
Emotional Resilience
Family and Friends
*There are so many statistics and facts that
show how much your social circle can affect
your well-being and health.
*Your social relationships have positive or
negative affects on your well-being in many
instances who you are with the most you tend to
act like. If your friends are always negative, you
feel the same way. Or if they are always going
to runs or outside you tend to do the same.
*Sometimes families will be apart, and
technology is a helpful factor that keeps
everyone together.
These kinds of impacts dictate who you are and
make your thoughts and feelings shift.
According to an Australian study. Conducted by
the Centre for Ageing Studies at Flinders
University, the study followed nearly 1,500 older
people for 10 years. It found that those who had
a large network of friends outlived those with the
fewest friends by 22%.
Enjoyable Career
On average a person spends one third of their
waking hours at work. This shows on its own
how much of an impact your work environment
can make. Whether you work because you love
it and your job is the most important thing or
work to pay the bills and your family is more
important. It plays a huge role on how you react
and behave.
Technology and the internet are helping more
and more people obtain jobs in their careers,
which is what helps their well being.
“A study published in 2011 in the journal, "Occupational
& Environmental Medicine," the quality of your job is
closely correlated to mental health. Factors such as
benefits, job stability, fair pay and feelings of control on
the job can all increase your overall job satisfaction,
resulting in a positive impact on your mental health and
decreased mental health problems like depression and
anxiety. Positive relationships with co-workers and
superiors result in increased social satisfaction and
decreased feelings of social isolation, which can also
provide significant benefits for your overall well-being.”
Sleep Habits, and Exercise
When it comes to sleep and well-being, there is
a lot at risk. It is not just about getting enough
sleep.
Mainly in women, poor sleep causes weight gain
Poor sleep increases risk of type 2 diabetes
Poor sleep will hamper your exercise routine
Poor sleep increases nighttime blood pressure
Getting at least 20-30 minutes of exercise a day
3 times a week can drastically change your
mental state of mind and your self-esteem.
Swimming, yoga and fencing are the most
common exercises that boost your well-being.
The reason exercise is so important is because
studies show it enhances your feelings of self-
control, self-efficiency and self-esteem.
Money
Money is what makes the world go around, or so
they say. Money plays a huge factor in your
well-being without you even realizing it.
Where is your money going? Your well-being is
affected by this because of what you believe to
be important. If you have a lot of money and
you're spending it for the wrong reasons, or
hardly any money but are spending it for the
right reasons, you are affected differently.
5 things to look out for when taking care of your
financial well-being
1. Spending more than your income
2. Using credit cards for everyday spending
3. Spending money you don't have
4. Using debt to pay off debt
5. Impulse buying
Globalization
“The rich are not better off because
they have taken something away from
the poor; rather, the poor are better off
because they benefit from the
technologies developed by the rich.”
“Today’s average person lives longer
and is healthier, more educated, less
hungry, and less likely to have children
in the work-force. Moreover, gaps in
these critical measures of well-being
between the rich countries and the
middle- or low-income groups have
generally shrunk dramatically since the
mid-1900s irrespective of trends in
income inequality. However, where
those gaps have shrunk the least or
even expanded recently, the problem
is not too much globalization but too
little.” By Indur M. Goklany
The worldwide movement toward economic,
financial, trade, and communications integration.
Loss of Cultural
Identity
Today there is loss in cultural
identity, and the main reason for
this is globalization. For the most
part globalization is great,
however it does have some
negative effects.
Most people and places are no
longer unique; everyone want to
be the same. Things that make a
place special is now being put
into other places trying to have
the same effect.
“In this globalized world, cities are becoming clones of each other,
and people are converging into fake stereotypes; gone are the
unique cities that carry so much history and culture in every
corner. Lost are the enriching cultural differences and specificities
that make a society uniquely what it is. Morocco looks like Spain.
London looks like Paris, which looks like Madrid. Restaurants
serving this or that country’s traditional food are drowned out by
the huge fast food chains. Beautiful traditional clothing is lost
between the new bulk-made looks created by the big brands,
people look alike, eat alike and dress alike whether they’re in
New York, New Delhi or MOROCCO.”
Nabila Nali
Globalization is having an effect on a number of things, in most cases it is a
positive affect when it comes to our well-being. Important things like our quality
of life, our rights and freedom, and peace and stability.
Well-being
As you can see, our well-being
is affected everyday without us
noticing it. So, paying attention
to the little things make a
difference.
Well-being cannot exist just in your own head. Well-being is a
combination of feeling good as well as actually having meaning, good
relationships and accomplishment
-Martin Seligman
