Editor's Notes

  1. Group 2 Team Notes (to be deleted for final presentation) Audience = school boardOur hat = teachers and technology specialistsRequirements from assignment description and rubric: thoughtful and persuasive explanation and defense of position effective use of and response to published arguments address MI teaching standards include audio narration and each member has a speaking part include images 15 minute presentation ~1-2 minutes per slideppt features from the ppt assignment – builds, transitionsTeam TODO:Final review of slides to determine whether we keep all of them, do they flow, is the order correct, is the look and feel consistentSarah, Chrysoula, Liz add audio to slidesAll add references to last slideAdd Conclusion
  2. Chrysoula add audio…Information technologies and communications have led to profound social changes in recent years. The new circumstances brought about due to change radically the structure and orientation of the education system. In the modern school ICT except than the “technology literacy” of students, is crucial to educational changes in the foreseeable future. The integration of new technologies in education and the proper use of them will bring long-term significant innovations in the learning-teaching process itself. A key advantage of technology is the ability to offer many different experiences, providing an opportunity to children from different social, economic, etc. levels to learn and express themselves in multiple ways. The rapid development of new technologies has brought about great social changes in many areas and activities. The school should not only monitor these changes but also use information technology and communication for the benefit of the learning process in all phases of school life. The computer is used to vindicate itself in the minds of children, not as an autonomous subject, but as an everyday tool for teaching, learning and communication. The computer plays the role of the window to information sources and provides a forum for communication and remote management methods such communications. The students will become more sociable, creative and more involved and their interest will increase. They will be less passive recipients and actively build their knowledge
  3. CaseyIn the classroom, teachers are attempting to solve problems of practice using pedagogical knowledge and tools available to them. You will next hear a sound byte from Dr. Peggy O’Keefe, the director of Instruction for Bendle Public Schools in Burton, MI.In other words, technology is implemented into the curriculum in order to enhance student learning. Technology, in itself, is useless in a classroom setting unless it is paired with proven pedagogic methods. Brabec says, “Building lessons on a solid, research-based foundation of effective strategies, adding appropriate technologies, and consistently applying those strategies should help ensure high-quality instruction that has the potential of maximizing student achievement.”
  4. Chrysoula add audio…(Note…the first sentence may be confusing since the title of the previous slide is “Technology is a Tool”)Technologyis not just a modern tool that can integrate to education. It can be combined with the basic learning theories that we all (educators) have studied and have great results in students’ learning process. I provide some benefits of using ICT based on the theories.
  5. Chrysoula add audio…“Discovery learning is an inquiry-based, constructivist learning theory that takes place in problem solving situations where the learner draws on his or her own past experience and existing knowledge to discover facts and relationships and new truths to be learned. Students interact with the world by exploring and manipulating objects, wrestling with questions and controversies, or performing experiments. As a result, students may be more more likely to remember concepts and knowledge discovered on their owndiscovery learning has many advantages, including:encourages active engagementpromotes motivationpromotes autonomy, responsibility, independencethe development of creativity and problem solving skills.a tailored learning experience”(http://www.learning-theories.com/discovery-learning-bruner.html)
  6. Chrysoula add audio…Assimilation, compliance ,adjustment, schema are the 4 basic concepts of the structural constructivism of Piaget.
  7. Chrysoula add audio…Aschema with the main representatives of implementing socio-cultural theories and how they apply in education through technology
  8. Sarah addaudio…Technology can be used to support 21st century skills, which are critical skills that students need to be productive citizens and successful in continuing education and business. In order to be competitive in the global economy, students will need to optimize knowledge-based resources, particularly in science and technology. Computers and technology will continue to replace workers who perform routine tasks, but will compliment workers who perform non-routine tasks that require critical thinking and problem solving.)References:http://www.21stcenturyskills.org/documents/21st_century_skills_education_and_competitiveness_guide.pdf http://www.futurelab.org.uk/resources/documents/lit_reviews/DigitalParticipation.pdf(Might not include all of the benefits slide – collecting them all then we will decide)
  9. Sarah addaudio…In a case study of Matas Elementary School, in Metairie Louisiana, teachers reporters that using technology helped them reach all types of learners, including visual learners, auditory learners, and hands-on learners. Tools including interactive white boards, student response systems, video, and podcasts allow all types of learners to be engaged.Reference: Matas case study(Might not include all of the benefits slide – collecting them all then we will decide)
  10. Sarah addaudio…Student response system technology such as Promethean ActiVotes or even cell phones can provide teachers with immediate feedback during lessons. Teachers know whether students understand the lesson and can make adjustments immediately versus finding out days or weeks later that the students did not understand the material.References:http://www.prometheanworld.com/server.php?show=ConWebDoc.81 http://www.prometheanworld.com/upload/pdf/A_Great_Response.pdfhttp://www.cellphonesinlearning.com/(Might not include all of the benefits slide – collecting them all then we will decide)
  11. Sarah add audio…Last year students at T.H. Harris Middle School, in Metairie Louisiana, participated in several technology projects, including creating podcasts for the Louisiana State Museum and for the National World War II Museum. These projects contributed to increasing LEAP (Louisiana Educational Assessment Program) scores in social studies and English language arts by 10 points for the same group of students from the previous year!)(Might not include all of the benefits slide – collecting them all then we will decide)
  12. Liz add audio…Include information from Erickson and Koppenhaver on using technology to integrate communication and literacy instruction For children with multiple disabilities
  13. Liz add audio…Educational Technology as addressed in the Michigan Teaching Standards and Technology (METs) is a powerful means of improving student learning. Educators should be knowledgeable about the ways in which student learning can benefit from educational technology.http://www.techplan.org/literacy.html Liz will read from the METS plan, give information on each standard.
  14. Liz add audio…“Michigan will develop innovative methods of funding to transform and sustain teaching and learning through educational technology, and build local, regional and statewide capacity.”Under the current circumstances in Michigan’s school funding, the funding for technology may be in danger.

  17. Liz add audio…If we read the Michigan Educational Technology Standards, we notice that they repeatedly say “ALL students”. This needs to include the students in our special education classes, and those who are easily overlooked when we look to define student achievement and learning. (Include personal experiences using word prediction software, and alternative, augmentative communication)
  18. Liz add audio…Add more pictures to illustrate communication and social categories.Assistive Technology generally falls into three broad categories (Include examples of augmentative communication devices at all levels, examples of social support through shared interests and the “slowedDown” communication of written, internet-based communication, examples of adaptive software to make curriculum accessible (such as word prediction, graphic organizers, etc)
  19. Sarah addaudio…Colleen Winkler, AP Literature teacher at Riverdale High School, Jefferson Louisiana, uses a blog to engage students. Listen to this TeacherTube video to hear about their experience.)
  20. Chrysoula add audio…
