Printmaking involves creating original artwork that can then be reproduced through various printing techniques. Relief printing is one method where the areas not meant to be printed are carved away from the surface, leaving the areas to be printed slightly raised. This document provides examples of artists who used relief printing such as woodcuts, including Albrecht Durer in 16th century Europe. It also discusses how exploration of Africa during that time period led to interest in learning about the continent's appearance through printed art since photography did not yet exist.
