Acrobat: Adobe program to capture and view documents in their original
appearance. Acrobat work with PDF files.

Banner: A graphic, usually rectangular, which is inserted into a web page. May
have advertising purposes.

Search: search engine. Is a program located on an Internet site, which receives a
search request, compares it to the entries in your database and returns the result.
Some of the best known: Yahoo, Google, Altavista, Lycos, Infoseek.

Cable-modem: modem that connects a computer to the Internet at high speed,
through a cable TV line.

CD-ROM: Compact Disk - Read Only Memory. Compact disc read-only. It has a
storage capacity of up to 650 megabytes, much greater than a diskette.

CPU: Central Processing Unit. Is the processor that contains the logic circuits that
perform the instructions on the computer.

Domain: set of characters that identifies the address of a website.

Download: Transfer of information from the Internet to a computer.

Font: full variety of printed characters of a certain style.

Freeware: Software of distributed free and is totally free.

Gateway: door; access; gateway. Point link between two networks.

Worm: A program that copies itself to fill the entire memory. A virus that usually
arrive via e-mail as attachment.

Hypertext: text linked together. Clicking the mouse the user moves from one text
to another, linked with the former.

HTML: Hyper Text Mark-up Language. Programming language to build web pages.

HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A protocol for transferring information in text
files, graphics, video, audio and other multimedia resources.
Image map: image of a website that allows different areas to click on to access the
different destinations.

Intranet: Network of networks of a company. Its appearance is similar to Internet
pages.

JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group: name of the committee that designed a
standard for image compression.

Link: Image or text highlighted by underline or color, which leads to another
section of the document or to another website.

Website: One of the pages that make up a site on the World Wide Web. A website
brings together a set of related pages. A home page is called "home page".
