Architecture case study - IIM AhemdabadOnal Kothari
The campus of IIM-Ahmedabad is not only an institution of learning but also a place for everyone to see. That is why; the institute draws the attention of both the students as well as common man. The campus of IIM Ahmedabad is spread over 67 acres of land. The building design of institute was created by noted architect Louis Kahn a famous American architect known for his majestic architectural designs.
Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode is an autonomous public business school located in Calicut, Kerala.
The institute, set up in 1996 by the Government of India in collaboration with the State Government of Kerala, is one of the 20 Indian Institutes of Management.
The panoramic view from the hilltop is a visual delight and conducive for learning and contemplation.
The topographical character of the site has been instrumental in determining the location of the academic and residential area.
They each occupy the summits of the two hillocks.
Spread on two hills with the buildings blending in the lush greenery with a mix of traditional Kerala style ethnic architecture with modern amenities
The design incudes the water management by using techniques like rain water harvesting ,creation of ponds for rain water and retained some of the older gullies which acted as STORM WATER DRAINAGE .
Integration of indoor and outdoor spaces in the campus
Some times there is tendency to lose a sense of unity or lose track of direction but architect has carefully and efficiently incorporated various entities in the site
The vernacular elements have been refined according to the context never failing to provide the required level of modern amenities.
Because of the terrain, there is a play of level differences
In spite of large amount of trees and vegetation their is a variety of beautiful and aesthetic plants and trees
All the buildings are oriented to a central court - typical “naalukettu” of Kerala’s traditional architecture giving a sense of unity
Integration of indoor and outdoor spaces in the campus

ECO SCHOOL DESIGN
Studies show that sustainable learning environments can be a big advantage for students, improving their well-being, happiness and even their cognitive processes. But how can parents ensure that their children’s classrooms are as green as they can be.
Themes do emerge: good daylight and indoor air quality predominate; a link between indoors and out is strongly asserted; and the use of benign materials is paramount. But this is no more than what good school design has always aimed for.

Architect and professionals, engaged in the domain of planning, designing , construction and operation of the built environment ; keen to learn ,understand and appreciate the real meaning of the sustainability, energy efficiency, resource efficiency and carbon neutrality in the built environment in hills, must visit, look, study, analyse and understand the intent, content and context of planning , designing and construction of the Institute ‘The Student’s Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL)’, located in Leh, the brain child of engineer Sonam Wangchuk, an alumnus (1987) of the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar.
Located in the heart of Leh, nicknamed the cold desert, having one of the most hostile climate for human living and habitation, with temperature fluctuating wildly, bordering on extreme cold and moderate heat , educational campus housing globally known, ‘The Student’s Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL)’, has clearly demonstrated and showcased , how potential and inherent strength of art and science of Architecture can be appropriately leveraged, to overcome the extreme challenges posed by climate and adversities created by nature, by effectively, efficiently, appropriately and intelligentially, using the same very nature and natural resources, to create qualitative, environment friendly, safe, cost-effective, energy/ resource efficient, zero-carbon, zero energy and sustainable example of built environment in hilly regions.
Spread over an area of 20-acre ,SECMOL campus, has location at an altitude of 3500 meters from mean sea level, approximately 18 km away from the Leh town in the Phey village of the Indus Valley, globally known for its most hostile cold desert climate, with temperatures ranging from 20°C in summer and -30°C in winter. The surrounding mountainous landscape is almost devoid of vegetation because Leh is positioned in physical space which is above the tree line. However, region is blessed with more than 300 sunny days annually, making sun a highly dependable resource for sourcing uninterrupted solar energy for heating and lighting. Starting on an experimental basis ,with limited number of students, SECMOL campus has grown and expanded, both horizontally and vertically, in its operation and activities, over the years. Campus now includes residential space for both students and campers besides area for training, work spaces, a library, kitchen and dining area for the inhabitants. All the buildings in the campus have been planned , designed , constructed and maintained with nature , making optimum use of solar based heating and lighting. In addition, 20-acre campus, initially devoid of any vegetation, has also made addition to flora and fauna by planting more than 1000 trees in the desert environment besides creating vegetable gardens and green houses and maintaining cows. The campus is entirely powered by solar energy sourced locally.

School is an enjoyable and enriching part of life
where students can safely explore their True North”
The client’s initial brief was that, a very important
part of every child's experience in Northstar be
shaped by architecture.
The design foundations at Northstar lie on ideologies
of exploring contemporary design with local material,
using regional references to define built form and
finding simplistic solutions for complex design
problems.
Ideology
Overall master planning was conceived integrating three phases of development of which only Phase
-1 is built. Open- ended corridors, building orientation and future development were factored into
the overall planning.
9. Features
Classrooms: programming a single classroom module with cross
ventilation, its own private garden and an open to sky jallied
courtyard. Between two classrooms is a larger garden that is
easily monitored, has a performance space and provisions for
conducting classes.
Central courtyard: central courtyard ties all the spaces
within each module and is replicated in all phases. This
central stepped and vegetated courtyard serves for larger
gatherings as a multi-purpose space and for circulation.
Entry walkway: The structure visually creates a
presence as one walks along the heavily canopied
main entry walkway.
10. Central stage: Integrated within the
courtyard amidst the green pockets,
creepers and vines is a stage, that is used
by children or staff to perform.
Secondary skin: Jalli in
ground floor and an ambitious
creeper screen in first floor, has
been planned in all floors to
allow natural light, shield dust
and provide security.
Multipurpose hall: With due
credits to the structural
engineer, the massing on the
second floor sits lightly on the
floor below and houses a 250-
persons capacity

16. The design focuses on providing spaces which encourage children’s curiosity and create a learning
landscape enriched with ‘play’ elements and natural forms.
The project forms part of the new Maidenhill
development at Newton Mearns, southwest of
Glasgow. A completely new neighbourhood,
comprising more than 800 homes, is being created
with the new two stream primary school and early
years facility sitting at the heart of the masterplan.
The unusual condition of school being built in parallel with neighbouring houses has given us an
opportunity to design not only a new learning centre, but also create a focus for the new community. A
“green spine” runs through the development, connecting the new dwellings to a central landscaped
pathway which feeds into the school.

18. Central atrium: The school is organised around a central
atrium ‘heart’ space, which contains a wealth of
interactivity including science, performance, music,
technology, library, art, storytelling and play.
Features
Creative activity spaces: The central ‘heartspace’ is
shaped around flexible learning scenarios ranging from
cosy ‘‘wall pocket’’ snugs and “birdhouse” hideaway for
individual and paired learning, through to larger
auditorium type spaces for group work. An internal
climbing wall or “Maidenhill” provides scope for high
energy activity.
19. Nursery: The nursery, circular in form and filled with natural light, is
designed around a central ‘treehouse’ storytelling snug that’s elevated
above the central dining and performance space. The theme of nature
permeates throughout the school and is reflected in furniture, materials,
shapes, colours and graphics.
The main playground contains a water pump and weirs, play tunnels, bouldering wall, mud kitchen and fire pit as
well as a tiered outdoor teaching and social space. This wooden structure contains storage for tools and materials
provided by the contractor for building dens, ‘nooks’ and other creatures of a child’s imagination.
Outdoor activity space: This ‘learning
landscape’ continues the theme beyond
the building where the design of the
outdoor spaces integrate the concept of
‘natural play’.

School Achieved Energy Performance

contains over 400sqm of Solar
Panels. Low energy emittance lights
and low water use fittings are
applied throughout the school. A
sedum roof covers the early years
building and the low level storage
units in the playground are covered
with sedum plants.
A growing garden for food production has been created.
Water harvesting is used in the water play areas of the
playground and is used as a learning tool for the
children.

The building design focuses on

The MS louvers on the stairs and
the window fins, add fresh splashes
of colour to the building- thus
revealing the function of the
building; aesthetically.
This rightly complements the mood and energy of young minds.
The window fins help in solar shading as well and ensure abundant sunlight inside
the classrooms.
There is a fresh flow of ventilation and abundant natural light through brick jali.
The colourful, triangular fins on the windows are
inspired from decorative pennant flags- which add
cheer and delight.
Minimal glass is used on the facade, so heat trapped inside is reduced.
