Helen Keller was born deaf and blind after contracting a fever as a toddler in Alabama in the 1880s. Her parents sought help from Alexander Graham Bell, who recommended Anne Sullivan to be Helen's special teacher to help her communicate. Anne taught Helen sign language at age 7, allowing Helen to surprisingly learn to read, write in Braille, and communicate within a month.
