Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. It acts on the brain's cannabinoid receptors, especially CB1 receptors. While some studies link marijuana use to increased risk of psychosis and depression, the relationship may be due to underlying mental health issues rather than causation. Long term heavy use has been linked to brain changes, but these appear reversible in non-heavy users. Withdrawal symptoms occur but are less severe than for other drugs. Overall, moderate use poses few serious health risks.
