Odisha is a state of India, one of the
musical centres of South Asia.
Travelling bards are a historic part of
the country's Heritage. In the 11th
century, Odissi music was codified
into a classical style related to other
styles of Indian classical music. It has
been noted that the Odissi music is a
type of ancient Indian classical music
known as Odramagadhi music,
3. The eastern Indian state of Odisha has a rich heritage of
dance and music that is a delight for all arts and culture
lover. Odissi music is a classical style of music that
comprises all the essential elements, such as talas and
ragas, common to Karnatic and Hindustani Music.
Initially Odissi music has the tradition of chhandas that
were low in musical outline. Jayadeva was the first Odia
poet to compose musical lyrics that were meant to be
sung and he also suggested the classical ragas existing
during that time in which the lyrics were to be sung.
From the 16th Century, musical treatises, named Natya
Manorama, Sangita Kalalata, Gita Prakasha and
Sangitamava Chandrika, were written and compiled in
the state. In the 19th Century, two treatises Sangita

classical music and a part of Ancient magadhi music, which
all the essential as well as potential ingredients of Indian
classical form.
But it has not risen to prominence
due to apathy from the time of
British rule in Odisha.Despite this,
the traditional music form could be
saved because of the supported
efforts given by Jaga Akhadas of
Puri district, who preserved its
tradition. The music movement of
Odisha, however, took a different
turn after independence.

cumulative experience of the last two thousand
five hundred years if not more, can broadly be
grouped under five categories:-

7. 1.Tribal Music:-
The indigenous tribes of Odisha are the architects of the
state’s vibrant culture. The echoes of their soulful music
brightens up the hills and forests. Earthy lyrics and
traditional instruments are the distinctive hallmarks of the
tribal music in Odisha.
2.Light music:-
Light music is a less-serious form of Western classical music, which
originated in the 18th and 19th centuries and continues today. Its heyday
was in the mid-20th century.Occasionally also known as
mood music and concert music, light music is often grouped with the
easy listening genre.
8. 3.Folk music:-
Energetic beats, raw lyrics and feet tapping music are
typical of the Folk Music of Odisha. The lyrics draw
inspiration from the incidents of day to day life and nature
establishes a strong connect with the listeners, which has
in turn helped the folk music scene in Odisha to evolve
and survive the onslaught of modern music.

originated in the 18th and 19th centuries and continues today. Its

Odissi music (ଓଡ଼ିଶୀ ସଙ୍ଗୀତ) is a genre of classical music in
India, originated from the eastern state of Odisha. The
traditional ritual music for the service of Lord Jagannatha,
Odissi music has a history spanning over two thousand
years, authentic sangita-shastras or treatises, unique
Ragas & Talas and a distinctive style of rendition. The
various aspects of Odissi music include : chaupadi,
chhānda, champu, chautisa, janāna, mālasri, bhajana,
sarimāna, jhulā, kuduka, koili, poi, boli and more.
Presentation dynamics are roughly classified into
four : raganga, bhabanga, natyanga and dhrubapadanga.
10. According to Bharata Muni‘s Natyashastra, Indian
classical music has four significant
branches: Avanti, Panchali, Odramagadhi and Dakshinaty
a. Of these, Odramagadhi exists in the form of Odissi
music. Odissi music crystallised as an independent style
during the time of Odia poet Jayadeva, who composed
lyrics meant to be sung, set to ragas and talas unique to
the local tradition. However, Odissi songs were written
even before the Odia language developed. Odissi music
has a rich legacy dating back to the 2nd century BCE,
when king Kharavela, the ruler of Odisha (Kalinga),
patronized this music and dance.
11. Odissi sangita is a combination of four
classes of music:-
1. chitrakala,
2. chitrapada,
3. dhruvapada
4. panchal.
The main ragas in Odissi sangita are:-
Bhairavee, Baradi, Dhanashri, Kalyana,
Karnata, Nata, Panchama, Shree Gowda
and Shokabaradi.
