SISI are now known as MSME-DI,
Micro,Small,Medium enterprise- development institutes
 After 1947 , Small scale industries received special privileges In the Indian economy.
 Starting from cottage industry board to Comprehensive policy package.
 Providing Institutional Infrastructure for SSI
SMALL INDUSTRIES SERVICE INSTITUTES (SISIs)
There are 28 SISIs and 30 Branch SISIs set up
in State capitals and other industrial cities all over the country.
The main activities of these institutions are as follows:-
Assistance/Consultancy to Prospective Entrepreneurs
Assistance/Consultancy rendered to existing units
Preparation of State Industrial Profiles
Small Industry Development Organization (MSME Development Organization
(formerly known as SIDO)) – Functions and Duties
General introduction
 The Small Industries Development Organization (MSME Development
Organization (formerly known as SIDO)), headed by the Additional
Secretary & Development commissioner (Micro, Small and Medium
Enterprises), is one of the apex bodies of the Government of India, Ministry
of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, to assist the Government in
formulation of policies and programmes, projects schemes, etc., for the
promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the
country and also coordinating and monitoring the implementation of these
policies and programmes, etc.
 Promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is
primarily the responsibility of the States and Union Territories (UTs) and the
role of the Central Government (including the MSME Development
Organization (formerly known as SIDO)) in this field is to aid and assist the
States/UTs in this endeavour
 MSME Development Organization (formerly known as SIDO) functions through a
network of MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known as Small Industries
Service Institute)s (MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known as Small
Industries Service Institute)s), Branch MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known
as Small Industries Service Institute)s, Regional Testing Centres (RTCs), Field Testing
Stations (FTSs) and autonomous bodies
• It renders services such as:
• A] Advising the Government in policy formulation for the promotion and development
of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and
• small scale service and business entities (collectively referred to as small enterprises)
and for their graduation to medium enterprises.
• B] Providing techno-economic and managerial consultancy, common facilities and
extension services to small enterprises.
• C] Providing facilities for technology up gradation, modernization, quality
improvement and infrastructure of/for small enterprises.
• D] Developing human resources through training and skill up gradation of small
entrepreneurs as well as its own man power.
• E] Providing economic information services to the Government and small enterprises.
• F] Maintaining liaison with other Central Ministries, Planning commission, State
Governments and other organizations concerned with
• development of small enterprises
Role /Functions of SISI
1. To assist existing and prospective entrepreneurs through technical and
managerial counseling such as help in selecting the appropriate machinery and
equipment, adoption of recognized standards of testing, quality performance etc;
2. Conducting EDPs all over the country;
3. To advise the Central and State governments on policy matters relating to small
industry development;
4. To assist in testing of raw materials and products of SSIs, their inspection and
quality control;
5. To provide market information to the SISI’s
6. To recommend SSI’s for financial assistance from financial institutions;
7. To enlist entrepreneurs for partition in Government stores purchase; programme
8. Conduct economic and technical surveys and prepare techno-economic feasible
reports for selected areas and industries.
9. Identify the potential for ancillary development through sub-contract exchanges;
10. Organize seminars, Workshops and Industries development programme.

SMALL INDUSTRIES SERVICE INSTITUTE SISI are now known as MSME-DI, Micro,Small,Medium enterprise- development institutes  After 1947 , Small scale industries received special privileges In the Indian economy.  Starting from cottage industry board to Comprehensive policy package.  Providing Institutional Infrastructure for SSI SMALL INDUSTRIES SERVICE INSTITUTES (SISIs) There are 28 SISIs and 30 Branch SISIs set up in State capitals and other industrial cities all over the country. The main activities of these institutions are as follows:- Assistance/Consultancy to Prospective Entrepreneurs Assistance/Consultancy rendered to existing units Preparation of State Industrial Profiles
  • 3. Small Industry Development Organization (MSME Development Organization (formerly known as SIDO)) – Functions and Duties General introduction  The Small Industries Development Organization (MSME Development Organization (formerly known as SIDO)), headed by the Additional Secretary & Development commissioner (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), is one of the apex bodies of the Government of India, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, to assist the Government in formulation of policies and programmes, projects schemes, etc., for the promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the country and also coordinating and monitoring the implementation of these policies and programmes, etc.  Promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is primarily the responsibility of the States and Union Territories (UTs) and the role of the Central Government (including the MSME Development Organization (formerly known as SIDO)) in this field is to aid and assist the States/UTs in this endeavour
  • 4.  MSME Development Organization (formerly known as SIDO) functions through a network of MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known as Small Industries Service Institute)s (MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known as Small Industries Service Institute)s), Branch MSME - Development Institute (Formerly Known as Small Industries Service Institute)s, Regional Testing Centres (RTCs), Field Testing Stations (FTSs) and autonomous bodies • It renders services such as: • A] Advising the Government in policy formulation for the promotion and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and • small scale service and business entities (collectively referred to as small enterprises) and for their graduation to medium enterprises. • B] Providing techno-economic and managerial consultancy, common facilities and extension services to small enterprises. • C] Providing facilities for technology up gradation, modernization, quality improvement and infrastructure of/for small enterprises. • D] Developing human resources through training and skill up gradation of small entrepreneurs as well as its own man power. • E] Providing economic information services to the Government and small enterprises. • F] Maintaining liaison with other Central Ministries, Planning commission, State Governments and other organizations concerned with • development of small enterprises
  • 5. Role /Functions of SISI 1. To assist existing and prospective entrepreneurs through technical and managerial counseling such as help in selecting the appropriate machinery and equipment, adoption of recognized standards of testing, quality performance etc; 2. Conducting EDPs all over the country; 3. To advise the Central and State governments on policy matters relating to small industry development; 4. To assist in testing of raw materials and products of SSIs, their inspection and quality control; 5. To provide market information to the SISI’s 6. To recommend SSI’s for financial assistance from financial institutions; 7. To enlist entrepreneurs for partition in Government stores purchase; programme
  • 6. 8. Conduct economic and technical surveys and prepare techno-economic feasible reports for selected areas and industries. 9. Identify the potential for ancillary development through sub-contract exchanges; 10. Organize seminars, Workshops and Industries development programme.
