Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) first emerged in the 1960s with the introduction of language laboratories, though the technology was not widely used until the 1980s. As technology advanced in the 1990s with the rise of the internet, CALL began to integrate text, sound, pictures and videos to revolutionize language learning. Today, technology is seen as an indispensable tool that complements education. Effective CALL puts learners at the center, adapts to their needs, engages and motivates them, is informed by research, focuses on language learning, and helps learners improve.
