Text of page 55, students book, grade 10
In Mozambique about 87%of farmers are subsistence farmers who cultivate their lands with traditional tools. They rely on the rains
and if these don‟t come, no crops are sown. However, technology has proved efficient in minimizing the suffering of farmers who
choose to use it.
Irrigation sprinklers can be used on farms, golf courses, residential yards, and other places to water crops, lawns, gardens or other
plants in the event of drought. Most importantly, sprinkler irrigation has helped most undeveloped communities increase their
production. A clear example is the sugar cane industry in Mozambique and South Africa.
Poor rains and droughts no longer stop then from producing cane for their sugar mills.
Questions
1. What is the importance of technology?
2. The words “Innovation, invention and discovery” have different meaning.
a) Pprovide the meaning of each word giving at least one example from the text in each definition.
b) Tell about the pros and cons of technology in the field of agriculture. Provide some examples.
3. Address some question to the text so that we can discuss in next lesson
a) Give title to the text.
