All About Magazines

 Unlike books, magazines have publications which
include illustrations on a variety of subjects.
 Before the arrival of internet, magazines served a
better purpose than they do now.
 They have vast amount of knowledge on different
topics including pictures, reviews, advertisements,
articles, stories etc.
What are magazines?

 The name magazine appeared in 1791 with the
introduction to gentlemen’s magazine, the worlds
first magazine.
 With technological development, increased
circulation, and increasing use of images, magazines
were becoming increasingly attractive to advertisers.
 The general interest of magazines began by
containing some news, poems, political events etc
History

 Manufacturing of early magazines was done via
printing press in which large hand woven engraved
blocks were used for printing.
 With the development of magazines the production
of printing press also increased.
 These magazines initially showed an increase in
literacy and political awareness
 Moreover; the gap between time and prints provided
a platform for arguments through magazines.
Development

 Paid circulation: In this circulation, magazines are
sold to readers where a yearly or monthly price if the
magazine is send by post.
 Non-paid circulation: This circulation involves
giving issues to unspecific population meaning it has
no cover price.
 Controlled circulation: This circulation is done often
to qualified readers, free, and determined to some
sort of survey
Distribution

 There are three main categories of magazines,
including consumer, trade, professional and in-
house.
 Consumer magazines are often printed for general
public and is termed as the “glossy” magazines
 Trade magazine and professional magazines target
audience is people who work in a specific industry
 In-house magazine serve special interest groups and
non-profit organisations
Types of magazines

 Often people read magazines that cater their interest,
class or age group
 They focus more or selective stories which enlighten
the reader
 Individual magazines focus on specific aspects of life
for example lifestyle, fashion, business etc.
Why do we read
magazines?

 21st century magazine’s more than just paper and
staples.
 Gradually print magazines are declining, while there
is rise in electronic magazines.
 Magazines are brands and it’s the successful
publishers who are growing those brands across
multiple platforms example Vogue.
