Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist, and travel writer from 1850-1894 who is best known for his children's classics such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He also composed music for the keyed soprano recorder called the flagcolet. The poem describes the thrilling experience of traveling by train in the 19th century, with the rushing scenes outside the window and the speed and movement of the train charging along like troops in a battle through the meadows and past horses and cattle.
